I wouldn't go as far to say you're racist as easily as some other's do but I don't think you're aware of what you're implying sometimes... like saying Beyonce is given a freepass to make whatever the quality because she's black? Now, I debated with myself whether to call you on that but I seen someone else already did and I assumed you didn't mean it near as literal as it came across. Some members, like Harry, won't give you that pass of assuming you meant it a different way or not bother to call you on something because someone else already has. Now, I'm no saint. I can argue with people on here for hours but it gets to the point that when it's the same name you just ignore them. There's a member here with a very one sided issue with me, so I just ignore them. They might make the odd shady post about my opinion but f*ck 'em. They're not a bad person, we just rub each other up the wrong way. Even when you're both discussing your problems, you're both still trying to score cheap points off each other and it will get to the point that one of you will get banned because you're both not willing to let it lie. I can see why someone might say it looks ignorant. But that's probably because I didn't go into in-depth detail and give examples. If I did, you might see a bit of validity in what I'm saying, even if you don't strictly agree. I am perfectly aware of what some things I say might imply but I honestly don't mean anything bad. I've always supported all races and that's why I want to see us all on an even playing field and no special treatment should be given. Whenever I see what I deem to be preferential racial treatment, I always speak up on it, regardless of the race (I was very vocal about Kendrick Lamar losing out to Taylor Swift for AOTY and suggested that a racial angle was played and I'm not even a fan of Kendrick's album). I'm a music reviewer, I love music and I don't like to see certain artists given free passes for making bad music just because they're a legend or a nice person or whatever. And I can't help but notice that especially nowadays, black artists seem to get unnecessarily critically acclaimed despite being bad/medicore whereas white artists are getting more honest, realistic feedback. The way rap albums get reviewed these days, you'd think it was still the 90's golden age. Rap has been in a bad place for ages, why do critics keep pretending any different? Nowadays, most rappers have terrible flow, have problematic lyrics, have bad production, have no excitement to their music, talk in undecipherable stoner drawls, incorporate obnoxious laughing and "lighting up blunt" sound effects, sing about nothing but empty extravagance. But the critics love it! How can I, and many other members of the public, pick up on flaws that the supposed professionals can't see? My only conclusion is 2 things - paid-for reviews and racial bias. I find it very hard to imagine that there isn't a free pass given to black artists when trash like Anaconda and Trap Queen get nominated for Grammys. I sometimes think because all the good rappers are thin on the ground now, critics are just taking what they can get, they aren't demanding better. And we still have a terrible judgement against white rappers, even when they're actually pretty good. And recently, we've been boosting up lacklustre RnB from Pharrell, Beyonce and Drake. I just don't get it. If we demanded better, we might actually get quality rap and RnB again. Does being a professional critic make you switch off the realistic centre of your ear or something? It's why I remain an amateur critic. At least I've got the guts to refuse to boost legends egos and I'm a realist who isn't paid to lie and patronise. You make a good point about it all ending in tears between us. But I just try to ignore him wherever I can unless he says something that is so personal and untrue that I just have to call him out. If I don't, he'll think he can get away with it. For the record, he doesn't just do this to me. My woes have been echoed by a few others. So, I'm not just sticking up for me, I'm sticking up for anyone who's ever been spoken down to by him. 11 minutes ago, Harry said: Whatever. You play a good game and you know you do. I'm not fake like you no matter how much you may claim the opposite. Go on claiming to support women while you simultaneously trash talk a woman who doesn't let people walk all over her and doesn't take any s**t from you. You support women as long as they support your beliefs. And that final comment showed your true colours, no pun intended. And you criticised me for name calling? KingRedd 3,139
23 hours ago, StrawberryBlond said: Such a typical response. It doesn't always come down to jealousy. You'd only be jealous of a singer if you're a singer yourself. Beyonce just frustrates me for a lot of reasons, that's all. I've listed my reasons and you still want to call it jealousy? If you can't come up with any reasons, you just hate her, then you can claim jealousy. But still bringing it all back to that cliche response just shows how un-accepting you are of other opinions. And I do have a problem with some of her music. I just didn't list that one. And yes, that last bit was totally aimed at me. Rest assured I never make judgements based on people's race. I'm criticising people that give allowances because of race. And it does happen in the industry. Record labels do it, critics do it, the public do it. Black singers just get automatic respect these days even though most of them aren't a patch on the ones from the 90's and before. Don't get me wrong, all new singers in general don't really thrill me but the difference is, I notice the black ones get treated with a whole lot more respect even when they're on the same level or worse. I mean, explain why the atrocity that is Future gets critical praise, for example. You know if a white guy did that kind of music and rapping, he'd be laughed out the door. Beyonce would never talk down to people? Look at how she treated her bandmates for years ("all of the bad seeds are now out of Destiny's Child"). And have you ever listened to Ring The Alarm? Irreplaceable? Single Ladies? Best Thing I Never Had? A lot of the lines from Flawless? A lot of the lines from Formation? This is the problem that I have with her fans - they think she's an untouchable goddess who does no wrong and would never say a bad thing about anyone. Because she gets so much praise that you'd think she had a whole lot of talents when in fact, she can only sing and dance. If that's all you can do, I think praise should be kept reasonable and not overdone. Save that for the actual artistic creators. A lot of people can sing and dance but not many can write songs. You can enjoy the music but don't praise her for it because it didn't come from her. I don't worship any singer who is just a singer. You have to give me more than that because anyone with a good voice could do what you're doing - singing a song someone else wrote. If an artist can't provide 100% effort, they don't deserve ultimate praise. Just my opinion, though. I'm sorry if it came across that way. I'm not racist, I just observe things and feel the need to comment on them and black singers getting overly praised when they're just as basically talented as white singers, or less, it annoys me. I think everyone should be held to the same standard. There is a distinct stereotype that blacks make the best urban music, so they get a bit of automatic respect before they open their mouths whereas whites always have something more to prove. It should be an even playing field. I don't care what race someone is - if they're great, they're great, if they're bad, they're bad. But lately I've just seen so many allowances for mediocraty or outright awful material from black artists that I have to wonder if there's a bit of bias going on. See what I said to Harry a few quotes above. Yeah, there may be some racist people out there who don't like her because she's black but for the most part, being black has never been a barrier to success in music like people like to believe it is. I mean, in 2004, every #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 (12 in total) was by a black artist, including the people featured. 6 out of the 9 #1's in 2005 were by black artists (Mariah counts as mixed). 13 out of the 18 #1's in 2007 were by black artists (Fergie counts as mixed). Urban music ruled from 2003-2008 and its made a comeback recently. We need to open up our eyes and stop believing these lies about blacks not being able to get anywhere in the industry because of their colour. In the mainstream scene and definitely in the urban scene, there's no problem anyway. And about BTW vs. 4, I've never liked Beyonce, successful or not. She was around before Gaga came along, so she was never a threat to my fave since the beginning. It's just because she's so overrated by so many people, that's all. Gaga is catching up to her with successful singles and she's not even been around as long. Beyonce sells albums and tours (with Gaga also does) but not singles anymore. Gaga still can have singles with decent levels of success, though, so technically, she's more successful, at least to me. If there's anyone who's been a threat to Gaga, it's Rihanna, Katy and Taylor. Beyonce never has been, bar her self-titled, but then that only had one successful single that only really the fans and music reviewers know of. When a rich, successful artist says it, though, it's such a smug thing. It's only acceptable if they're a rapper because bragging is part of the game. But a regular singer bragging about things we mere mortals will never achieve is so self-righteous. Most people who sing these lines won't even believe them, not really. If you slay, you don't need to say it, you just quietly believe it. Saying it can have the opposite effect. If you want to be considered cool, never say it. Because claiming to be cool is in itself un-cool. Because cool people aren't tryhard and don't have to state the obvious. I didn't know success was not allowed to be celebrated lol Beyoncé just "lives for the applause" May I Read You? 😎
