After Judas bombed, Gaga was trying to play it safe with an experimental album. She was destined to fail. The whole era damaged her career unfortunately. It was a good album which was horribly managed. You literally just described ARTPOP hun 08, 09, 11, 13, 16,

I prefer her to sell 2-3m and being real and experimental than not experimenting and selling 10m Exactly Britney this thread is stupid and I'm sick of them, UM if anything this album won Gaga so much respect and put her up there as a real musician....and gained new fans. end of thread

Benji 20,113
I don't think it would have mattered what Gaga put out at that time because people had started to have had enough already. It just goes to show how amazing Born This Way is though because despite people having enough, it still shifted huge amounts. It's a shame ARTPOP was such a weak follow up. Regardless, Born This Way will be the album that people look back on and see as her best record (so far).
Sunday 2,183
I think it was too ahead of it's time. Looking back, it wasn't as appreciated as it is now. People these days have already been claiming it as her best album to date.

eifulien 2,968
I was GP back in 2011 and it definitely alienated me, and people around me. Obviously not because of her advocacy on LGBT rights. At the time she seemed she was running out of ideas when it comes to image so she was becoming more and more aesthetically unpleasant. (Sorry I don't like BTW video) The only time I enjoyed her visuals was in Judas MV which is her biggest hit here from BTW, and even a couple of weeks ago on a party some friends asked me to play Judas, they don't even remember the other songs. I mean, for me BTW is the time where her visuals could have been better. At the time she seemed like she was doing all this for the wow factor, the shock value. I liked some songs from the album but abandoned it very fast. It was the first full album I heard from her and was very underwhelmed by the content considering her previous material. When ARTPOP came, before beginning to stan hard and digging deeper, I used to have the thought - like Thank God, she is done with BTW. For me ARTPOP was a return to her previous greatness and coolness. But as of now, I'm on the opposite side. So don't drag me or try to convince me it's otherwise. I know, and I love BTW. The impact of BTW is so enormous; it deserves way more recognitio. Gaga brought the gay talk in mainstream media and it stopped being viewed as a negative thing. Right now, you'll have a hard time watching a series/a film without an LGBT character - and this was almost taboo before Gaga. So while the album was ahead of its time, it was a necessary one. It is a slow grower and will be a classic one day. I don't think Gaga will ever top such a resonant work. In terms of music contents - for it's a hit or miss and that's where it charm lies. She was way too ambitious on it, forward-thinking and unconventional. I wish it wasn't rushed cause at times it sounds unfinished like the quality of the recording is lower than TF/TFM. BTW gave us some of her greatest and some of her most cringey songs but even at its final tracklist it's good enough.

paul 687
to be honest, regardless of what she released and how good it was, people got sick of her kind of style quickly. as she's so polarising, confident in what she believes and fearless in making art, people were starting to roll their eyes even from Just Dance and got sick of her as they got to know her theatricality. she's had bad criticism and public perception has been negative from the very beginning, trust me. By big im not directly referring to sales. I'm meaning the general reception to it. Born This Way was not nearly as impactful and memorable as its predecessors.
