Coz he grew up on TV with the Jackson 5, he is more famous. America watched him come of age from the late 60s to adulthood in the 80s.

It's weird because the media have always hated Michael yet loved Madonna.

Madonna was banned from the  US radio for political reasons  for some years and her album American Life was bitten to the dust from critics.

Well yes, I mean she can sell out arenas worldwide and her name is one of the most iconic and famous ever. That's just my perception tho.

American Life was controversial but only because it was after 9/11 and there was war in Iraq and Aghanistan and her album was perceived by conservatives to be an anti-war album.

Go back to 1989 and her album Like a Prayer was REALLY controversial because of the religious imagery. Yet the media and critics labelled it a breakthrough and hailed it as her finest work.

I think maybe Madonna used controversy to her advantage but Michael did not know how to deal with it.

Well, i dont know if it was to her advantage this , but she did her thing and to me this album American Life and the Reinvention Tour are the most important works of her.

That was her second (third?), album.

Much different than a release later in her career.

Madonna has been damaging her image for the past decade, it's really sad but we won't know what impact it has on her legacy until she dies.

I dont believe she is damaging her career. I believe some people or some recent assstudies are trying to frame it like that. She launched a very important project in 2013 art for freedom. The media and the press tried to tear MJ down also because of the child abuse thing, but when he died they said they were all sorry and how good person he was and everyone preached him to heavens.:derpga:

Let's put it this way. Madonna was streetsmart. She knew how to hustle and how not to be hustled. MJ on the other hand was awkward, overly shy, sensitive and too trusting.

Like a Prayer was her 4th album.

Yeah she's kind of lost the plot lately but how can we say anything negative? She's always been this way. Why are we saying that it's no longer acceptable all of a sudden?

The thing with Madonna is she's smart and tough and knows how to play the game and use the media to her advantage, unlike many of her contemporaries who were badly influenced by fame and drugs and other things (think Whitney, MJ) - she is one of the only few greats who leads a disciplined life and stays professional to her craft.

back to the question, I think she is as famous as Michael and theoretically she's still got time to progress further cuz she's not dead.
