But seriously, thank you to the people who actually respectively disagreed and the select few who did agree. It was just a theory. Gaga is known for having a double meaning in most of her music and as a survivor myself of sexual abuse (age 5 and 14) I literally just heard it as a different song post Oscars. Do I think every song has a rape undertone, no. Just "Swine", "Monster", and "Just Dance". Was not trying to ruin someone's favorite "light hearted party song". That is all. I'm sorry if you were offended by my comment. I just wanted to add to the list. Alejandro. I really think the part where she's describing the guy as her "Dad" is referring to her Rapist because on Howard Stern Gaga did say she respected the man just like a Father. And to this day Gaga has never shed light on the second verse of Alejandro. I'll lift you 3 inches off the ground and drag you to a meter and a half

Kind of disturbing actually.

Well done. 8 hours ago, Lord Temptation said: Your use of sarcasm is really low. Don't you know that Gaga's music always has a double meaning. Yes, Just Dance is, on one level, about being drunk on a dance floor. But on a deeper level, it's about abuse and the lack of power. Please do not trivialize the song by saying that nobody is entitled to interpret the song differently. People see what they want to see, and if all you see is "just a party song" then that's fine. I see a lot more than that. Um....

Elizabeth 450
A similar thought did cross my mind but I do think that this song is literally about being drunk ect. I suppose it could have underlying connotations thought so I wouldn't say it's definitely not, but even so I don't think it was intended to be interpreted that way. GreekGod 1,085
No man. Even Applause is more "rape song" than Just Dance is monsters are sometimes too...

uo111 5,261
Monster is the sequel to Just Dance so you aren't really far off. Look at the lyrics to Monster and it will make sense. It's basically about being taken advantage of while drunk but also being confused by the experience. It's very real. She also clearly states it's the sequel with the line "I wanna Just Dance but he took me home instead."
Seeka 12,372
I think the main thing about this thread is that we've kind of had the "is this song about rape" thread a lot. Especially since... I think Bad Romance, really. And many of us have guessed Gaga is a sexual abuse victim before Till It happens to You (didn't she even say she was sexually assaulted before as well? I don't remember). So, I think it's just some of us have been talking about it for a while or are just tired of all the rape talk. You have points, and there is lyrical dissonance, most of us do think it's about being stupid ass drunk.

I'm not sure if Gaga originally intended for Just Dance to have such a dark theme, but with Monster she is pretty clear on the subject. Both songs are still party songs, but you would think fans of Gaga would realize that party songs can have adult themes. It's kinda sad that bringing up the deeper meaning in Gaga's songs cause people to get so defensive. Oh well, what is art if it's not divisive? Alfonso 1,549
I thought it was about just dancing Sorry I had to say it I actually think it's about having fun and partying, but interesting review
Spooky 501
I'm surprised I don't see more people mentioning I Like It Rough when discussing Gaga songs with a possible rape subtext. He makes her feel like **** (can't sleep with a man who dims my shine) and she's blaming herself at first (lovin' me's like chewing on pearls), using drugs to cope (prom girl wipes her tears with silver lines), crying, and hiding behind a locked bedroom door while he's pounding on it and trying to get in. And she still wonders, at the end of the song, why every sexual encounter she has needs to have some element of violence because "that's what adults do." I'm probably looking way too deep into it, but this is always how I've interpreted it. It might be more about an abusive relationship in general rather than straight up rape, but I think the lyrics still hold up. like a ghost, i vanish into you
