U.S. House of Representatives

His 1990 victory was described by The Washington Post as being the “First Socialist Elected” to the United States House of Representatives in more than 40 years.

Served in the House from 1991 until the time he became a Senator in 2007. Over a span of 16 years, he continuously won re-election by large margins, with the only exception being 1994.

In his very first year in the House, he co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus. He led this group for its first eight years. Its primary devotion is to advance liberal causes and is currently the largest organization within the Democratic congressional caucus.

He sided with the minority in voting against the use of force against Iraq in 1991 and 2002. He also opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Voted against the Patriot Act despite the majority of Congress voting for it (357 to 66). He also sponsored several amendments trying to limit its effects, even getting a proposal passed through the House preventing the government from obtaining a record of the books people buy.

Was an open critic of Federal Reserve Chair Alan Greenspan and took him head on insisting he only represented “large and wealthy corporations.” Greenspan later admitted to Congress that his economic ideology regarding risky mortgage loans was flawed.

He passed more amendments than any other member during his time in the House. It earned him the nickname “The Amendment King.” He did this despite being a “socialist” and Congress being controlled by Republicans from 1994 to 2006, in one of the most partisan right-wing Houses ever.

Passed an amendment to “require offenders who are convicted of fraud and other white collar crime to give appropriate notice to victims and other persons in cases where there are multiple victims eligible to receive restitution.”

Passed an amendment that improved Postsecondary Education. It administered a competitive grant program to institutions of higher education seeking to reduce costs through the purchase of goods and services. This saved colleges and taxpayers both money.

He amended the Treasury and General Government Appropriations Act of 2003, stopping the IRS from being able to use funds that “violate current pension age discrimination laws.”

He expanded free health care and won a $100 million increase in funding by using his amendment powers. This added community health centers that gave out a variety of free health care services.

Prevented child labor by passing an amendment to a general appropriations bill. This stated that the U.S. will not appropriate funds for the importation of goods made by the hands of minors.

Won a $22 million increase for low-income home energy assistance and a related weatherization assistance program. This helped heat homes for the poor.

Passed an amendment that formed a bipartisan coalition effectively prohibiting the Export-Import Bank from handing out loans for nuclear projects in China.

U.S. Senate

Defeated a wealthy businessman, Rich Tarrant, to win his U.S. Senate seat in 2006, in one of the most expensive campaignsin Vermont’s history.

Received the distinction of being named the third-most popular senator in the country, according to Public Policy Polling in August 2011.

Given a score of 100 percent by the NAACP and NHLA (National Hispanic Leadership Agenda) based on his record during his time in the Senate.

Named one of the top 5 American Jews of the Forward 50 in 2015.

Chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs in 2013-2014.

Became ranking minority member of the Senate Budget Committee in January 2015.

Became ranking minority member of the Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging.

Passed an amendment making sure that solar water heaters provide at least 30 percent of hot water for new federal buildings. This is forcing us to use green energy.

Made sure to it that bailout funds weren’t used to replace laid-off U.S. workers with exploited and poorly-paid foreign workers.

Helped ensure that child care was being offered to parents in the Armed Forces by requiring the Comptroller General to provide accurate reporting on what was being done.

Required a public database be made available showing the names of senior Department officials seeking employment with defense contractors. This helped crack down on corruption.

Required that the TRICARE program provide treatment to veterans affected by certain types of autism. It wasn’t previously being done.

Won a battle requiring the Government Accountability Office to conduct an audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System (the part that doesn’t interfere with monetary policy). This revealed the names of the recipients of over 2,000,000,000,000 in taxpayer assistance.

Was praised by John McCain(R-AZ) and Sen. Jack Reed(D-RI) for overhauling the Veterans Administration. Was said to have done such an excellent job of bringing all parties to a deal, that it wouldn’t have gotten done without Sanders’ work.

I applaud you for your copy/paste skills but to save you the trouble of typing up essays I wish there was a list that big on the bills/legislation he helped passed in his 30+ years of congress that helped black people since according to his supporters he is a respected civil rights leader that was even arrested. I eould love to see a list that big that has bills/legislation that he passed that helped the lgbt community because according to his supporters he is our gay savior. I would love for you to show me how he has helped young student in college in regard to high tuition and debt. Since this is what his campaign runs on, can you give me 3 bills/legislation of those 3 main points I mentioned? If you can, as a Bernie supporter; give me proof of that, I will stop supporting Hillary Clinton.

So did my mother. I grew up listening to so many homophobic statements and degrading terms. Not directed at me but it still hurt because the shoe fit. Once I came out and pretty much gave her an ultimatum. She chose me. So now she's a completely different person and supports me unconditionally. People grow, people change. Obama change his mind and so did 99% of most people over 50.

Can you imagine then, being a champion of these views and ideas for decades during those times? It's a beautiful thing to evolve and change, and I'll never begrudge someone a genuine change because I agree with you about the transformative power of an epiphany. But boy is there something incredible about the trail blazers that fought when the weeds were ten foot high and thick as can be. Not just for LGBT but for desegregation. Not just desegregation but for womens rights. Not just womens rights, but workers rights.

When you get someone whose entire life is about human beings and their equal worth and place in the world, that's powerful stuff.

I think his point is that when politicians "change" their views when it becomes politically convenient it's very shady. An example would be Obama. He started supporting SSM in May of 2012 months before the election when polls indicated for the first time 51% of the public supported SSM.

Very True & I don't disagree with you about politicians changing their views for political gain or expedience.  But they are also HUMAN too & not ROBOTS!  And humans can change there mind, especially as years & years go by...  IJS

You do realize she used to be extremely homophbic and only changed her stance on gay marriage to benefit her

If you did your research you would know that Samders also opposed gay marriage.

This!! And while you're at it, give me a list of bills where he supports the Hispanic community.... yo know what, let me make it easier, how about ANY minority.

I'm not even going to front: I'm stuck. I like both. Unlike MOST of Sanders supporters, I've known of him for YEARS. I've always liked him and his ideas from the get-go. I just haven't seen anything he's done to benefit me or anyone I know directly. Hillary was my senator in NY and I've always admired her. She's always showing face and getting attacked for it. I respect that. I will be a ferocious supporter of Sanders if he wins the nomination because he truly is amazing. Just amazing. I just can't put him above Hillary even though...... this is hard for me to say but, I support his ideas a lot more than Hillary's. I would dare say I'm a Socialist Democrat too. Hillary is just more electable in the General Election in my opinion. I feel like the Republicans will have a field day with him. Yes he's leading them in the polls more so than Hillary but that's because she's been getting constantly bombarded for decades and Sanders has yet to prove himself against the billionaire powered GOP machine. Too much at stake to gamble with Bernie. I can't.

100% rating from the NAACP

100% rating from the ACLU

100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign

@Hauser

I get a little confused. Sometimes he's too progressive and now he's not progressive enough? He's one of the MOST progressive legislators in Congress...coming from a rural state and campaigning for decades for every human rights cause under the sun- not for some attainment power or position, but literally because he feels that's what he's on the earth to do.

I understand preferring Hillary if she's more your taste. But if you're a progressive, I'm not sure how you can be against Bernie Sanders from the "he's not progressive enough" angle. Is there another legislator that is progressive enough? He's got a lot more proof in his votes than Obama EVER had x10.

Very fair, you already answered my other post. I appreciate your honesty and I understand where you're coming from. We disagree on where to hedge our bets, but we want the same things.

Cheers :)

So you go for complacency instead of legitimate change? :S To too many, Hillary Sanders is damaged goods. She's been in politics for ages. I personally fear that Hillary will face the same kind of obstructionism from the Republican Party that Obama has.

I have to say I think it's shameful to vote for somebody just because you think they're more likely to win, when you agree with somebody else more. Make a stand man, Hillary is such a corporate bot.

Well, I respect your position. Thank you for posting this. Often people come off as strictly haters of someone. (I probably do at times as well).

If you support his ideas more why not support him in the primaries but Clinton in the general? I mean she is most likely to win anyway. There won't be another chance to support him again. I don't think he'll run again :)

You've misunderstood where Im coming from. I think Bernie is a great guy and I love how he is very progressive in fact a dhare a lot of his ideas. My issue is that Bernie could be KING of liberalism and progressivism but if his record doesnt show that, at the end of the day he is not qualified to be president. He can have the greatest approval rating in the world but if he got nothing done in his 30 years in congress, nothing done in his state of Vermont, what good is that? If you go and apply for a manager for a restaurant or a store, being nice wont get you hired. What will get you hired is having experience, referemces, skills, which is everything that Bernie is lacking in the political version of my example.

Also, you claim thag Bernie has spent his WHOLE life fighting for rights of minorities while Clinton has flip flopped...let me remind you that Sanders opposed gay marriage in 2006 and voted FOR the crime bill that encarcerated many black americans that you all were trashing Hillary for.

@Larry Hill

I'd just ask you to both continue to be open about the two candidates.

We have a distinct opportunity this election that is VERY special and hasn't come around in a few lifetimes: the chance to elect someone free of all the lobbyists and corporate influencers: free of the oil money, the prison money, the banking money, etc. It's so much bigger than Bernie Sanders. It means starting the engine of on a democracy that says that regular people choose their leaders, they aren't chosen by corporate donors and banks and oil companies.

The root is really about shifting America away from the ever increasing influence of corporate interests on our democracy. Hillary isn't a bad person because she's a part of this system, for so very very long its all that was possible. We have a new possible way now, a way that we've been told can't happen.

If we say no to this chance now, it's going to affirm that money and mega donors and lobbyists and corporate influence is here to stay. If we say yes, we accomplish something that will positively impact our country for decades to come.
