Hell, if having a good voice was the only criteria, little old Betty who hits the karaoke every wednesday would be a superstar. That's like asking, why an expert tracer who can copy people's work down to finest detail isn't famous and hailed a star. It's why actors who can hit notes in a musical never go into music professionally, there is more to it. That "X-Factor". I think it's sad people are obsessed with tearing down artists who just want to make cute bops that you can dance to or an artist with so much to say and yet they're criticised like they have to be perfect at everything. Gaga can't dance for a sausage, luckily the camera can fix that. Gaga's range used to be pretty patchy compared to other artists, luckily she had the capacity to improve it. Gaga had to change her entire image to stand out. Gaga's writing is hit or miss, luckily she has good writers around her who can steer her in the right direction. If you want to pick apart artists, you can do it easily by focussing on areas they need help in. If you focus on what they're good at however, you will have a better experience. Everything from their attitude, clothes, their talk and their walk is carefully scripted by their record label and endorsements. Singing, let alon music, has very little to do with it. I pretty much agree with what you're saying, but stating that Sia is the best vocalist out there is absolutely subjective. I can totally understand and tell why, her high belts are extremely beautiful, emotional and powerful, but her singing varies a lot. I think this may be the reason why you like her. Rihanna has a beautiful voice... I wish she could stop smoking pot, do vocal rest and train her voice. Now she's kinda ruining it and not taking care of it at all! I 100% agree on Ellie though, even if lately, her latest music doesn't give her much room to expose her amazing vocals, except 3 songs on her last album. This is why shows like The Voice can't produce major stars. Because they judge completely on the voice, despite the fact that stars are made precisely because of all that superficial stuff like looks and star quality. If a good voice was all it took, the charts would look very different and big voices wouldn't have dropped in sales. You can have wonderful singers that have no star quality. You can have average singers with amazing star quality. The music industry and the public favour star quality.
