Sony weighs in on Kesha and Dr. Luke's contract

Sony Music has now offered a statement about the ongoing litigation through a lawyer. Speaking to The New York Times on behalf of the company, Scott Edelman said, “Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement, or interaction with Luke whatsoever, but Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha.”

Kesha’s contract is with Gottwald’s company Kasz Money, which furnishes her services to Sony; this technicality is why Sony claims it cannot terminate her contract.

This has always been the case, Sony have said to Kesha she can work with another producer without talking to Luke but this is still not good enough. Luke's contract with Kesha reserves him the right to produce 6 songs on the album and oversee its promotion, publication, and everything to do with future releases, as well as any live events she does.

Even if she works with another producer, Luke is still very much in the picture.

Whispering

So, it is Dr. Luke that won't let go?

Just let her go! It's like keeping a coach for a team or a player when they want to go somewhere else (which, by the way you can't do!...of course that is a male dominated industry), all it would do is create a toxic atmosphere and end up hurting the team and the program! They even let college players go to other schools. All they have to do is set out one year. Nothing good is going to come out of making Kesha stay with this label!

Why is the recording industry unlike any other business? Why do they get to keep people like slaves?

Kesha doesnt have a direct contract with Sony, shes signed to DR LUKE'S label, which has an exclusivity deal with Sony.

HE, has to end it

Yes, as long as profits from her future releases go to him and as long as he is in complete control over the album. She may not have to record with him but he is still very much a part of the process.

Bonkers

There are other ways for Sony to put pressure on Dr. Luke.  They should be working to do that.  I'm sure they are, corporations HATE this kind of attention.

That kinda obvious since she's signed to his label not to Sony.

Is like Gaga with Interscope, they have control over her albums and singles releases, Gaga has freedom with them, yeah, but not in full freedom

another shot before we kiss the other side

Right,  I see,  thank you :). The contract is apparently worth 60/70m I read?  But how much of that is even an upfront investment and the amount she has earned in sales it mustn't be that substantial?

Luke would appear to not want to work with Kesha,  like I just don't see why these three parties cannot end this simply and let the poor girl just go.  :saladga:
