Yeah, the fact Lana has barely any nominations despite having more critical acclaim than the 13-time nominated Katy exposes the truth about what really increases your chances of getting a nomination. When an artist stops being successful, they usually stop getting nominated. You'll notice that the only songs Katy gets nominated for are her biggest hits, even though she's released more mature Grammy bait ballads like Thinking Of You and Unconditionally. But those songs flopped, so that means no nomination. She only gets nominated for singles that went #1 or top 10, hence why only 2 of her singles from Prism got nominated.. That's certainly how it operates for the popstar categories anyway. That's right! The fact that a song like My Humps by TBEP has a Grammy...yeah, it's catchy but nothing else. Every year, they show their similarities with the VMAs tbh

Every year, they show their similarities with the VMAs tbh Trap Queen also got nominated this year, as did Anaconda the year before. They didn't win, but it's still a travesty that trashy rap is getting more praise from the academy than quality rap. In Gaga's case, I also think in terms of Best Soundtrack for Visual Media, they have a habit of copying what the Oscars picked as the winner, so they don't look stupid. Don't get me wrong, I think Glory's a great song (better than TIHTY, if I'm being honest), but I do find it suspicious that it won after it won the Oscar the previous year. I think if TIHTY had been released a year ago and won the Oscar, it might have won the Grammy. Which means that if it does win the Oscar at the end of the month, the Grammys are really going to look bad! They need to sort out the elgability periods. They work on different settings. The Oscars can nominate something that just got released, but the Grammys have a specific September 30th deadline. I don't get what it is with American award shows - why do they refuse to nominate stuff released from October-December until the next year? Why do they sometimes put out best of lists before the year is over? As a music reviewer who always waits until January 1st to start making lists, this infuriates me immensely! Some people say the Grammys are all about awarding quality, others say it's all about popularity. The winners prove that it's a bit of both and it's on and off from year to year. Plenty of non-commercial, lesser successes win, so it is about judging quality to an extent. I don't believe you can win purely on popularity (most of the time). But what is abundantly clear is that getting a nomination is 100% about popularity. Grammy voters have spoken about this before - how the stuff that even gets considered is 9 times out 10, the stuff that most of the academy is most aware of and they disregard anything obscure, regardless of how well received it is. And that a lot of the time, the academy doesn't even listen to all the songs/albums nominated, they just slap on the most likeliest choices, the ones they and most of the public would recognise, and make a choice based on the most popular selection. From 2010: Taylor Swift Arcade Fire Adele Mumford & Sons Daft Punk Beck Taylor Swift There goes the opportunity for Gaga to win album of the year . Even if they break this rule, she still needs to take on 25 by Adele.
