She's the main stakeholder in this situation and her team knows perfectly what to do, why RIAA gave the certification so fast without delay? This all looks planned out so Rihanna can be blamed.

i hate such political correctness while we can observe the cheating clearly. But yeah we have not much to do with it, maybe that's why some people accept it.

I don't see how it's cheating though, album copies were sold, why does it matter how many and from who? Money still came out of someone's pocket :emma:

The way this "accomplishment" is being celebrated while Gaga had to face hate and criticism for selling BTW for 0.99 on Amazon makes me sick.

I also don't understand why people are saying this. Did you even look at the responses in this thread? People who know what happened are mostly criticising her lol while others are praising it... just like the 99c deal. Media are just reporting that RIAA certified ANTI platinum, which is true.

All your comments bashing her are so hateful. She didn't give away 1 million albums just to get platinum. She gave them away as a gift for the fans, to get alot of people to listen to it and prevent people from downloading it illegal. And it's massive marketing for Tidal trying to get more users.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.  At first I was appalled to learn of the Samsung deal, but then I realized that it was a way to ensure Rihanna and her team got their money, given that her fans would've illegally downloaded the album anyway and they would've been out that money.

We all need to face reality.  Unless you're a highly relatable artist, you're not going to have massive album sales anymore because the general public isn't going to be there to buy your music.  It's the type of climate that we're currently in in the music industry.

Who are the pop girls' fans?  All kids, teenagers, twentysomethings and a few older people.  Those people don't want to pay for music knowing they can get it for free online.  It's the general public, and of course some fans, too, who are supporting artists like Adele.  The general public consists of people who actually pay for music because they like it.  Stans, of course, also pay for music, but a lot of them download the music illegally and don't pay a dime.

There are exceptions to every rule, but I think we're going to see these types of deals with every single artist in the future.  As times change, I guess the music industry has to adapt to those changes, too.  It's a sad reality but there's nothing we can do about it with all the piracy going on.

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

When will Samsung buy a million copies of your fave?

I guarantee you that there are many artists who could strike a deal with various companies in exchange for promotion for their brand and allowing the companies to be involved in profiting from a tour of that artist. Also, if you throw in a deal with a streaming service to get some of that money back, it all ends up being a good deal for both businesses.

That still won't mean that these artists sold a million albums to music consumers. They still gave away a million copies of their album and those people also got two months of a streaming service for free for simply downloading an album.

It doesn't affect new artists. Who really cares about certifications anyway? If a brand new artist manages to get a platinum certification then great for them, but it's hardly something that is going to be career breaking if they don't.

Bigger artists can do bigger campaigns. A brand new artist can't pull a Beyonce and just drop an entire visual album on itunes out of the blue and expect it to break the internet, a brand new artist can't pull a Miley and create a free 'experimental' album while supporting it with a tour, a brand new artist can't pull a U2 by getting Apple to download their album onto every device and a brand new artist can't partner with Samsung and allow their album to be given for free to their fans.

New artists can still release their own work. It's unlikely to be a huge blockbuster hit, but that never is very likely. Nobody has downloaded Rihanna's album for free and then gone "Oh wait a second, I would download this other album but I've just splashed out an entire $0.00 on Rihanna's new album and that's platinum!"

It's just as difficult for newer artists to be certified, I really cannot see how anything has changed because Rihanna made a deal with Samsung to provide people with free downloads of an album.

It's wrong ethically and you are delusional for standing by this. It's unfair. Your point is invalid and corrupt.

aaaaand looks like I'm never touching a Samsung device again. Tragically, Billboard and Nielsen and deleting this platinum record. Lmao at her haters who downloaded the album and didn't realize they were helping Rihanna to a platinum record. Poor Rih tho, at least she tried.

I pray Gaga doesn't do the same thing

Whats so hard about that just let a corporation to buy 10 M copies and congratulation you have 1 diamond  album :D

It's not hard at all! Get a business to buy your album for any price (because the price of the album doesn't matter for certifications) and get Apple to offer people a couple of free months with no strings attached. Then get both these businesses to profit from each other and have a piece of the touring money and you've got everyone from a mid-level artist and up going platinum and multi platinum with their albums.

You are right, artists like Adele could have been Diamond certified overnight! Lol

Billboard and Nielsen aren't deleting anything lmao. RIAA is separate thing and only they are one in charge for certifications. It was known even before ANTI that stuff like this counts towards certification and not total sales (aka what nielsen reports)

And Gaga did same thing actually expect she made her record 0,99$ so Billboard would count it too.
