And haters attacked Gaga for doing deal with Amazon, but then other big pop star hands out album for free and counts non-sense downloads everybody is fine with it, why are some of you such big hypocrites? It's not platinum, it can't be, it's like Apple would buy 1m albums from Gaga and it would be platinum, that's a non sense.

This is beyond embarassing.

And lol at people saying it's fine becaue she couldn't have made money any other way. That is even more embarassing.

Nevermind that there is no defense for ANTI getting "platinum" from free downloads.

I don't think Rihanna can be blamed for this, I mean her fans and others are getting an album for free :laughga: Blame the certification company for their rules :emma:

Same thing with the Gaga situation, blame Billboard and RIAA, don't blame Gaga :toofunny:

She made a marketing deal with Samsung who agreed to purchase her music so that they could offer free downloads. It's just a smart marketing move and with the way records are selling these days it's not such a dumb move either, if artists are not going to be able to make much money from selling albums then this is a great idea on how to profit from an album.

I mean great, she made money from people downloading her album for free. With torrents people would have downloaded it for free anyway and she wouldn't have made a dime.

Who is the loser in this situation?

The loser in the situation is every ****ing hardworking new artist who hasn't made it yet.

A brand new artist doesn't get a corporation to back them so they actually have to EARN their sales based on people voting with their dollar. If they sell, for example 900,000 copies they don't get platinum certification. But if an established artist releases a crappy album they can get a corporation to buy up the album in bulk and it's deemed "Platinum". I thought these certifications were supposed to be based on ALL PEOPLE having an equal say with their dollar. Not corporations pre-deciding what they want to be popular and inflating it to look that way.

This system makes it easy for established artists to put out the same crap and not have to work hard, and makes it more difficult for new acts to be fairly represented in the music industry.

It's fraud to me. The Samsung deal should count as 1 sale. Just like it does for every other person.

I feel like most people are only having an issue with this because you all put too much weight in the bragging rights that come with sales and certifications. No one really cares about that except stans. The labels and artists are effectively just trying to make a profit, and that's what they've done here.

Bottom line is she managed to make a ton of money from an album that likely would've performed quite averagely otherwise, and her fans are allowed to enjoy it for free. It's a win-win. I don't understand what there is to be so angry about.

Aside from a select few artists, album sales are in the pits. We all know that. So labels are of course going to be looking at new ways to make money outside of the traditional realm of pure sales. And if big cooperations like Samsung are willing to invest in an artist like Rihanna then that's a testament to her power. Same as when Best Buy paid Gaga to have Born This Way given away for free with their mobile phones, or when Amazon covered the cost of those 99c albums. We weren't calling Gaga a fraud when she took the money from those deals because they were smart business tactics. I don't understand how this is different.

It doesn't affect new artists. Who really cares about certifications anyway? If a brand new artist manages to get a platinum certification then great for them, but it's hardly something that is going to be career breaking if they don't.

Bigger artists can do bigger campaigns. A brand new artist can't pull a Beyonce and just drop an entire visual album on itunes out of the blue and expect it to break the internet, a brand new artist can't pull a Miley and create a free 'experimental' album while supporting it with a tour, a brand new artist can't pull a U2 by getting Apple to download their album onto every device and a brand new artist can't partner with Samsung and allow their album to be given for free to their fans.

New artists can still release their own work. It's unlikely to be a huge blockbuster hit, but that never is very likely. Nobody has downloaded Rihanna's album for free and then gone "Oh wait a second, I would download this other album but I've just splashed out an entire $0.00 on Rihanna's new album and that's platinum!"

It's just as difficult for newer artists to be certified, I really cannot see how anything has changed because Rihanna made a deal with Samsung to provide people with free downloads of an album.

The way this "accomplishment" is being celebrated while Gaga had to face hate and criticism for selling BTW for 0.99 on Amazon makes me sick.

Her album could actually beat adele's record for most purchased album in a week if she has already been certified platinum although adele did sell 1.8m in 24 hours in the US

:applause::applause::applause:

You can't compare this to Adele when people actually went to the store to buy her album. :laughga:

If a corporation believes in you enough to give away ten copies to its consumers you are a big artist. Companies don't waste  money unless they make money. If this wasn't profitable to Samsung they wouldn't even think about doing it. Hopefully they buy 10 million copies of LG5 and make it go diamond. Because it shows how much these big companies believe in the power of the artist to drive their business.

She's the main stakeholder in this situation and her team knows perfectly what to do, why RIAA gave the certification so fast without delay? This all looks planned out so Rihanna can be blamed.

i hate such political correctness while we can observe the cheating clearly. But yeah we have not much to do with it, maybe that's why some people accept it.
