Rihanna's ANTi Review

I don't like the album, I don't know how to take it. It's not personal and meaningless... Now I don't know who Rihanna is. At first she was a popy girl, then she became a nasty b"tch, and now? Who is she? I expected at least one uptempo song. The album sounds to me like Miley's Dead Petz mixed with The Weeknd's. Now this music style is becoming mainstream, but I mean, you can do an I Can't Feel My Face, and you can do a Work. I love ICFMF, but I don't like Work. Even though there are good songs on ANTi, don't get me wrong, Kiss It Better for example. Don't quote me saying that I'm wrong and that I don't know anything and blah because that's my opinion. Some songs separately are good, but I don't like the album as a whole piece. And Tidal leaking it themselves? That's a mess.

¿Qué currículum tiene ésta tarántula?

To start, ANTi is definitely not a pop album. Rihanna went deep into trap with this album. All songs are urban/trap tracks except for Never Ending (an acoustic pop song) and Close To You (a ballad). Many of the songs on this album also have a 50s/60s retro influence and as a whole all the songs are slow to mid tempo. A good label for this album would be atmospheric. Listening from top to bottom definitely shows the consistency of the album and it truly feels like a cohesive work. However, just about half of the songs on this album are truly interesting. Consideration, Higher, Same Ol' Mistakes (most experimental song on the album), and Woo fall into the interesting category. Songs like Close To You, Work, Yeah I Said It, and Never Ending fall into the generic, safe, and even somewhat boring category. However, is good to point out that Kiss It Better is one of the better produced songs (also has the best melodies) even though it is not the most interesting song. James Joint feels more like an unnecessary interlude rather than an actual song.  And Rihanna's first single Work is definitely the safest and most catchy song on the album. Now, Rihanna vocals are a mixed bag. Sometimes her vocals sound muffled, sloppy, and even lazy (Examples: Work James, Joint). Other times her vocals are used to its full potential (Examples: Higher, Consideration).

Rihanna definitely took a different and interesting direction with this album. The best aspect of this album is definitely is cohesive urban atmosphere. And overall, ANTi is not a great album but is also doesn't have many flaws.

Score:7/10

Let me ask you this. If it came out 6-8 months earlier would you be still thinking the same?

I am not sure what you are asking me here. What aspects of what I said are you referring to?

Well everything really. You think the album is good but not great is what I am gathering and you gave a fair assessment I have no qualms with that at all, I was wondering if you would have thought different when there was hype around this album.

Say it was released a week after the album cover... would you have thought different? based on that hype?

Maybe I would be more surprised by its sound then I was now. But overall, I always listen clearly to the albums themselves and ignore everything else.

James Joint is an interlude

janet jackson was a very clear influence on this record down to the inclusion of said interlude. chill flow rnb with electronic and trap influences making it contemporary. this is like rihannas version of 'the velvet rope'.
