My thoughts on the situation is that he was being extra, but I don't think he was wrong for feeling that way. Sometimes you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. I think he was better off being silent about this particular situation because it makes him look like he's speaking out for the sake of speaking out. Especially the way he did it because he sort of made it about him. ed. It's also very suspicious that he's doing this around OScar time during all of this frenzy.. AND he's an Oscar nominee..

Idk its just all too much going on right now.

I agree. He definitely wasn't wrong on speaking about it but the backlash isn't surprising to me as I've said in the OP and he is a bit delusional but many people are suspicious on why he's speaking about it now around THIS specific time when in the past he WAS aware of racism in the UK? Why is he all of a sudden in shock? This is like when celebrities go to charity events and bring the press with them to take thousands of photos to up their image. It's all so weird.

A lot of celebrities, politicians, journalists, etc have made mistakes and some apologized such as Madonna, Bran Ferning, Obama, Hillary, etc.

So what was the point on comparing Sam Smith to Anderson Cooper? You said he doesn't get backlash but he did get backlash.

Yeah it definitely came across as a PR stunt. Like, "Oh! Let me speak about racism so I won't be grouped with the racists!" Like ok, Sam... What're you gonna do about it?

It's science, bitch

I said he didn't get backlash when he spoke about rights of minority blacks.

One of the comments from the articles even said he spoke about police brutality but now he's trying to play it off as "oh i'm shocked about racist cops in the UK" even though he spoke about it before. It all just seems so calculated.

I never said he was wrong about tweeting his experience but the backlash on twitter, outlets, blogs, etc aren't surprising how with awkwardly he's worded those tweets. He can tweet whatever he wants because he has the freedom to do so but people are always going to find reasons to criticize but I actually understand why some POC find his tweets to be "extra".

Ok....someone's tweet being "extra" doesn't mean anything. It just shows that the person is an emotive or sensitive person.

That's nothing new considering it's Sam Smith we're talking about here. How is that a shock or out of character? Just because the subject is racism, doesn't mean one has to abide by some Goldilocks level of outrage.

Where is the controversy? Stop defending these people.

One can know about things and still be shocked when experienced first-hand or in third person.

We know about rape on college campuses. Should we not be shocked when they happen, to a friend no less?

Why are you assuming it's a PR stunt? Are celebrities incapable of experiencing these things?

Why should he do anything about it other than talk about it to his followers?

For people who supposedly think that Gaga gets random hate from people for everything she does, one would think you'd have learned your lesson on speaking out of ignorance.

People are just annoyed with his tweets because he has played the victim card before on twitter and there are tweets bringing up his nominations and performance. Just because I understand the criticism doesn't mean I'm defending them. I just posted my opinion from both sides as I don't think he's racist and it comes from a good place but it is a bit suspicious and I understand why people are on his back.

I hate that people think that if you are hurt about something thats not about you, then it means you are seeking attention or drawing attention upon yourself. I hate that people think every word holds a double meaning for their secret agenda of popularity. You know what I hate? That we are hypocrites, we say that everybody can hold an opinion, but then bash when someone says something we don't like. And yes, hating upon it is an opinion per se that must also be respected, but I think that tolerance and respect is being lost.

This is getting ridiculous :awkney: I don't even know what to say? He can't even comment that racism is bad and shocking....because he's white?

Lol, the reverse racism in "Whitespaining"...

Can't we all just pretend to get along and stop hyper-analyzing these "micro aggressions", Jesus Christ.

Well if people know that he's a drama queen, as you suggest, then what makes the topic of race more worthy of scrutiny? He's a drama queen. #thread

Sam has nothing to gain from this sort of issue. I'd be more suspicious of Jada Pinkett Smith and her boycott of the Oscars to further her own reputation within the black community than a British person talking about racial issues and having Americans get pressed over it.

Good thing I'm not a cynic and know it's not true.
