From WIki-

It is presented to the songwriters who have composed the best original song written specifically for a film. The performers of a song are not credited with the Academy Award unless they contributed either to music, lyrics or both in their own right.

I think she'll be fine :/

I'm glad Gaga changed "TIL YOU GOT A HOLE RIPPED IN YOUR SOUL", what a hiedeous title :wtf:

Gaga basically made the song by changing that line

Queen of minimalistic accomplishments

I think that was a line in the song they changed. Not the title. That's what I took from the tweet at least. Maybe im wrong. Idk.

Well, maybe but the whole reason that's relevant is because if she didn't co-write it she would have banked on a song spreading awareness about sexual abuse to look good and win a couple of prestigious awards.

Which indeed doesn't make her look good at all :air: But it would focus more on the message/value of the song I guess :rip: #nvm

She just can't win. This happens all the time in the industry I'm just tired of Gaga being the one called out on things like this. Why are her feet held to the fire and not the hundreds of artists who have done it before her?

@reallindaperry is an avid reader of GGD ... i guess.

Just wondering if one of us is her (ie Didy)?

I said I don't agree with her so I hope it's not me.

Hmm, but she wrote it in caps... But I guess it's just the twitter troll in her :green:

Which is worse, a song writer calling out a peer for taking too much credit on a specific song,

Perry and Gaga are not peers tho.

That's probably it. Obviously the song wouldn't have been the same without Gaga and I'm sure Diane wouldn't have allowed the credit if she didn't feel it was deserved.

A good comparison is Beyoncé including I Was Here on 4, also written (completely this time) by Diane. Beyoncé's credited as the producer but not as a co-writer, probably because like you said the essence of the song's composition remained unchanged.

Edit: Still doesn't really clarify why Gaga's credited as the main writer though Bebe's right in saying that even if she was credited last, she still would've been nominated too so.. probably promo reasons then.

Well I suppose you could compare Elton John's songwriting credits with this potentially.

It's very, very well known that Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to basically all of Elton John's hits, but if you look at the credits (such as for Your Song) you can see that Elton is still credited as the main songwriter because he would basically take the lyrics Bernie had written on a piece of paper and create a melody and song from those lyrics.

I wonder if this is the reason Gaga is named as the main writer. Diane clearly came up with the lyrics and did already have a finished song when Gaga got a hold of it but because Gaga changed so much it sort of became a similar situation. Gaga had written the melody and the chord progression at those elements of the songwriting process while Diane mostly dealt with the lyrics.

(It feels wrong saying "Diane mostly dealt with the lyrics" because from interviews we know she would say "Yes" or "No" to Gaga's ideas, but I suppose the main point is that they where still Gaga's ideas).

I'm still not really sure to be honest and I still view this mostly as Diane's song, but this seems like the most reasonable answer to me because I'm not really sure if Gaga being the main writer would really bring that much more promo (considering Diane is almost constantly nominated for an Oscar with her songs).

I really hope Gaga doesn't forget about Linda Perry's existence and remembers to visit her twitter every now and then to keep her in check :green:

Source though?

I really don't remember Gaga saying she changed anything about the actual composition. Sure, she made it sound more aggressive etc. to make it sound like a victory song, but I don't recall her saying she actually changed Diane's basic composition. Someone here earlier said Gaga made more complex chords, but there are no complex chords in TIHTY and I can't imagine how they could be any more simple tbh.

I mean, if Gaga herself said the song was pretty much finished when she got connected to the project and they only made changes to widen the demographic, then why should we believe she changed something substantial about the composition itself?

I just think Diane gave it to her not because she changed melodies and chords, but just because the song sounded and felt entirely different after their meeting. Not necessarily a major change in composition. I mean, you have to remember that Linda says someone else was planned to sing the song so there's just no way Gaga wrote the melody.
