Sister 9,907
It is sad, but only the best of the Best have to walk through this fire and I am glad that Gaga has to, it gives her more of a fighting power to never get comfortable and to go even harder into the future. People only react that drastically when they truly know that something is indeed there and they are possibly jealous or even scared by such a power and watching or living through it's development. The future's uncertain and the end is always near.
Schwerk 7,243
1 hour ago, Didymus said: I think the "problem" is that Gaga's music is simply inferior to the talent that people always yell around. TF and TFM were wicked but then it went south and the "she's an extraordinary talent" thing just didn't fly anymore. You have to show it in your music first. Gaga herself alluded to that in her Billboard interview: "Is it really about the talent? I think for Adele it is. I think for Bruno Mars it is. This is what I learned from Tony: if it's not about the talent, you're way off." (paraphr.) I think she'll be safe from the more oblivious hate if she actually makes albums that are appreciated outside of a half-deluded stanbase that'll just think anything she does is perfect. 'cause even if she's gonna be recognized as a talent in later decades, I think that with this particular catalogue behind her, I think she'd always get the "too bad her music was so inferior" comment as well. I mean, anyone who seriously thinks that BTW or ARTPOP will be seen as extraordinary records in the future is just being crazy. I think we live in an age were no album can create that type of momentum anymore. Everything is consumed so quickly, there is little that leaves a lasting impression, no matter how good it is. We live in a world that thrives on hypes. Music has become so personal its hard to even have a hit song since everyone listens to whatever they want whenever they want. Many people don't even listen to a full album anymore. They just pick the singles/songs they like and dismiss the rest. In that aspect I don't see how songs like Edge of Glory, Born this Way, Applause or Do what U want are inferior to what she did before. I do feel she is capable of so much more than she's shown in the past. Many things were holding her back or distracted her. I hope her music can flow freely know and she'll take enough time to really produce her best work yet. No more autotune, no more rehashing the past. According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

Obvious modern classics are My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, To Pimp a Butterfly, Channel Orange, Stankonia, Songs for the Deaf and Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea at the top of my head. These are albums that will be remembered and appreciated far into the future. As for pop albums that I hope will be rediscovered and remembered: Ten Love Songs, Visions and St. Vincent at the top of my head.
VenusBlackStar 1,301
Bowie received tons of backlash and criticism back in the 70s for his music, his image, some particularly controversial public gestures, etc. but because so much time has gone by the general public doesn't really think about that, and most might not even be aware of those things. Example: In 1974 in some interviews he expressed support of there being a fascist regime in England and in 1976 he was accused of making the Nazi salute. Also saying that he believed Hitler to be one of the first rock stars, which even if someone today said that it would be supremely controversial. But unless you're a die-hard fan who takes time to read biographies and past interviews, or you were a fan and actually witnessed the press storm that resulted in the ambiguous hand gesture that doesn't even really look like a Nazi salute at all, most likely people won't remember that now, just like how hopefully years from now most people won't be using Leonardo DiCaprio's reaction to Gaga bumping him as something that informs their opinion of either artist because it'll be forgotten by most (except ultra-pressed haters who have no lives). The accolades Gaga receives for her music and now her acting will get more of the proper respect they deserve once they aren't so fresh in people's memories enough that they remember minute details to support stupid and uninformed claims. 20 years from now there (hopefully) won't be such debate about the quality of ARTPOP or even Born This Way or anything else she does. Later generations won't be influenced by all the stan wars and bias a lot of us face now and they'll be able to view the body of work objectively and consequently have better opinions of the quality of her work, high points and low points. gagzus 15,830
she's not taken seriously because of being a woman tbh, she's expected to sell sex as a female pop star whether it be as docile as katy's way or as attention seeking as madonna's was in the 90s. But because she wants to sell depth and real issues like rape, self acceptance and expression she's never gonna be taken seriously tbh, the sad part is she won't be regarded as highly by EVERYONE until the news announces she's dead in like 60 years time or whatever. Like, if you want to be taken seriously by people, don't get naked...it's not that complicated. Dress your part. Taylor Swift never did that, though she got a lot of backlash for being a man-eater, egoistic, money focused... As Michael would said, the more you're on top the more they want to bring you down Britney, Madonna, MJ, Bowie. Every true icon experimented that. StrawberryBlond 14,820
What you'll notice about the greats is that almost all of the endured backlash at some point. After all, people who are truly great are never everyone's cup of tea. Truly great people experiment, they take risks and that's what leads to backlash, because that kind of stuff provokes people who want everything to be predictable, safe and kept the same. But it's only once they've been around so long that we realise that we need these people in society and we appreciate how much they've changed their industries for the better. That's when we realise that they weren't needlessly provocative - they were brilliant. Change usually happens because someone was mad enough to challenge the status quo. There would be no change in the world without the bravery of such people. In the words of Katie Melua's song, Mad Mad Men: "Mad mad men and wild wild women and crazy girls...it's always the mad mad men and wild wild women who change the world." 1 hour ago, gagzus said: she's not taken seriously because of being a woman tbh, she's expected to sell sex as a female pop star whether it be as docile as katy's way or as attention seeking as madonna's was in the 90s. There's this problem too, yes. We're generally more accepting of men who are different. And we are also more inclined to believe there's all different avenues for a man to take but that a woman can only express herself in 2 very distinct ways - beautiful with no opinion or plain with brains. But when we have a woman who is not only beautiful but with an opinion, brains, wit and talent, a lot of us are intimidated. So, we tell ourselves that she's too perfect, stuck-up, not all that. But when a man is all these things, he's exalted to high heaven by everyone. 'Tis a hard life as a woman.
Blueskye 1,087
I stopped trying to make others like her a loooong time ago, there's no point. Many will just use it against you to annoy you. I've 'helped' a few people see her the way I do, but most people are beyond help where LG is concerned. Some people still refer to her as a man. There is no hope for these people. REALITY 76,270
I agree that some people still don't take Gaga seriously, but we don't need to waste our energy on them. But also, more importantly, isn't it hypocritical of us to put-down other artists just because we're not huge fans of them either? I mean, we see it all the time, and a lot of them are Little Monsters—or rather "Little Monsters". We put other people down and expect them not to retaliate back? That doesn't make any sense. We know who Gaga is and we don't need to prove it to anyone else. On another note, I'd change the fact that the O.P. focused heavily on David Bowie. We don't need comparisons between the two, I mean, he just passed away. Can we give him some respect and not say "Oh, why did Bowie not get any backlash, but Gaga did?" Of course, I paraphrased there, but can we instead just say "Why don't people take Gaga seriously?". We don't need to make comparisons to other artists, especially one who just, unfortunately, passed. Oh, and by the way, Bowie did receive his share of backlash, I mean, even he got his own "Illuminati conspiracies". 🦠🧙♀️🥀📸🎉👻🕺🧟💊💖☎️🔪👤🐺🌱🌎

AlexanderLevi2 5,849
There's always going to be people who hate someone. I mean it's just life. You could be the nicest human being but there will be someone who hates you. Plus, talent is a concept rather than a cold hard fact. People have opinions and that's okay. Do I like that they trash her? No. But it happens with every single artist. The Beatles, Bowie, Madonna, MJ, etc. there are still some people who deny their success. Does it really matter though? No. Just appreciate it for yourself and stop trying to control other people's feelings toward things. It makes things a lot easier than these "fan-wars" Currently listening to Joanne
