I've liked the singles but otherwise it's been a train wreck so far :rip: I feel kinda bad actually because imagine how Rihanna must be feeling with all of the changes going on behind the scenes :ohno: SHE DESERVES BETTER

I think the album was almost done in the beginning of the year, but after the first singles didn't sell as much as her previous work (or got as much attention) they got cold feet, decided on making a lot of changes and are still having trouble figuring out what "anti" is going to be...

My only though about the whole thing is that Rihanna (much like Gaga did with ARTPOP) started promoting and talking about the album way too early...she said the album was going to be one thing, now it seems like it's going to be a different thing; she's been keeping people hyped up for months, so now expectations are higher than ever for what the album will be as a product and as an art piece; she's been promoting something that doesn't exist yet, so, in a way, she's been only promoting her own image, which has got some people to turn on her...

I mean, if she had kept quiet this whole time, most of those things could have been avoided and "anti" wouldn't look as messy as it does now ...at the same time, I don't think it's impossible for her to turn things around and have a positive(ish) outcome - as I'm tired of saying here, sales are only part of the equation and public perception is very important...if she uses "anti" to showcase talent and reposition herself in the pop landscape (to be seen as a great vocalist or as a songwriter, etc.), this album cold just be laying the foundation for future success and for a longevous career...

EDIT: for the record, I really liked "4 5 seconds" and "American Oxygen". They seem to be aligned with the original idea for the album and with what Rihanna truly wanted to do...forcing her to change everything in order to sell more seems very short-sighted...

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

I don't really love the singles but I appreciate that she experimented with her sound. It was fun. Now if only there was an album to complete the era... But then again: ANTi is a myth. :)

She released her best music ever, her visuals have been astounding, her interviews have been refreshing and interesting. The only thing that went wrong imo is people spreading unnecessary rumors, most of all the tabloid press and fan forums.

How?

Well, of the 50+ ANTI non-news related threads we've had here, I think it's clear that it's filled to the brim with negativity every time :air:

But anyway, I'll exlpain then: all we've had to do this era was wait, while Rihanna released five songs, multiple snippets, the cover art and a presentation of more album art, did magazine shoots, gave interviews, did performances (incl. one at a major festival), released three fresh music video's and used a playful technological promo tool to make the wait a bit more bearable.

I don't care how ARTPOP's failures were connected to the Troy mess, that doesn't make the era less messy, especially when you remember that things were continuously promised and cancelled throughout the era (Act 2, Venus video, DWUW video, Gypsy video, multiple singles mess, fan video mess, app mess, the doll mess) and we had to endure comparable waiting periods (in terms of intensity and panic) pre-ARTPOP and during (DWUW, G.U.Y.) the era. Add to that multiple controversies (the infamous ARTPOP promo pic, the anti-ARTPOP Applause promo, the fake Interscope rumor), embarrassing promo moves (the Muppets special for example), cringeworthy performances (X Factor, DWUW & Gypsy @ SNL) and constantly ambiguous attitudes towards everything (compare the BBC interview with the H&M one) and I think it's clear that whoever calls ANTI messier than thàt when the era hasn't even properly begun yet is just talking out of his ass.

The only comparable element is that we don't know when the album is coming, that promo is messed up, that (mostly tabloid) rumors are flying around making it seem worse than it is, that people are rolling their eyes at the artistic stuff (most hilariously THIS fanbase) and that the singles haven't smashed in a way comparable to earlier ones.

Not that bad tbh. So far Rihanna hasn't broken one promise other than that the album didn't come "soon", but if anyone remembers the "soon" jokes here from 2012 all the way to a few months before ARTPOP's release, I think it offers some perspective to that as well.

The singles released thus far are all good. Bitch Better Have My Money is probably my favorite song of 2015. And it's a shame FourFiveSeconds wasn't nominated for a Grammy cause it sounds so fcking good.

The promotion and release have been messy though :rip: but I think Rihanna deserves the time, it's her album and her era, she doesn't owe us anything. Let's hope she gives us more brilliant and well promoted singles later.
