The history of "it" girls would be an interesting study, but would take a lot of work. I think Madonna in 1985-1987 and Britney Spears 1999-2000 would be a start. While I agree to a certain extent, there's a difference between just being an "it" girl and actually becoming iconic. I'm sure most would prefer the latter. So in regards to your notion of being the it girl twice, is it necessary when you're already in a league of your own? I don't think any artist has ever had a huge peak and then outdid that peak. . . look at MJ after Thriller. He didn't sell like that again BUT he was still massively successful. (R.I.P King of Pop!) What else is there to prove (except maintaining longevity) when you've already attained so much more than most artist would ever imagine? I don't care if Gaga ever returns to "Bad Romance" prominence. Honestly. But do I think she'll ever have huge hits/great sales and awards in the future. . . undoubtedly. I wasn't talking about iconic, but I agree iconic is the higher honor. I think someone probably only attains "it" girl status when they first break onto the scene in a big way. That is the time they are fresh to the public. I still think it would be an interesting study, tho. It is interesting that Tony said that if Gaga stuck with only pop music, someone would come along and replace her. He said that happens all the time. It makes sense, someone is only fresh for a while. But, as you said, Gaga is iconic even if she never returns as big as her earlier presence. But, then again, with her multi talents of pop, jazz, perhaps rock, TV, and movies, she could become an even bigger presence over all, just not in the limited pop scene. I live outside the space time continuum.

Most pop girls become the "it" girl because they are fresh, after that artists can peak again, but it would be more about the music than anything else. Like when Madonna came back in 1998-2000 with Ray of light and Music, it was a second peak, but it wouldn't be anything close to 1985 cuz she's just not that fresh. Same with Britney, when she came back in 2007-2008 with Circus, she wasn't the it girl, but she was big.
Riot Poof 2,236
It would be fun for me to bask in the glory of Gaga's chart and media dominance. At the same time, as long as Gaga's successful while maintaining her quality and integrity, I can't complain. I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never understand. I can get over the fact that people don't like her... It's just their opinions. Plus, is there actual hard evidence that shows people get backlash?? Or is it just your observation? Cause people who are "over" Adele sure seem to want to see her whether she is overplayed or not. Same goes for Taylor, her tour was beyond successful. So your logic is more just your opinion. It's obviously my opinion. There are not absolute facts about stuff like this . I actually even added some "imo" in the thread so that I wouldn't have comments like this one.Looks like it didn't work

Creyk 17,875
Mess. Ban the OP of this thread. Why is someone even allowed to say something like this, this is the worst thing you could ever say about any musician. Flop fan tbh.

I don't agree with everything in the OP but honestly yeah I think it would be better for Gaga not smashing like Adele... Imagine her doing this and then doing 2M copies sold with next album... ARTPOP era dissing would be back once again... I wouldn't be here to see Gaga trashed again like that... Like I said before even if Gaga sell as much as Bieber or even Selena it would be already great : very successful era without breaking all the records... I understand what CurlyBae said, when you're overplayed on radio you get people tired... I'm a huge fan of Adele, even my parents, and we're quite tired of hearing Hello being played too much on the radio...
DiscoHeaven23 35,007
i've thought about this sometimes and completely agree with you. Be a Rihanna level artist from 2009 to now (she was the top female artist in 2006 and 2008), BIG but not the top female artist. Ri's usually always been in that #2 or #3 spot. She was the #2 female in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
RAMROD 110,175
IMHO for Gaga, this factor might not matter anymore right now. The main reason she becomes so unpopular was not over expose, but her decision to blatantly siding with LGBTQ and using religious symbols in her performance and lyrics up to that point she was fallen. Before this, she still have decent followings from casual music listeners. Even some gays called BTW album deterrent because thet feel she put their group under unwanted attention. Or as some people at my office put it, "She became too weird to relate to" Either way, never be afraid for anything. The effect of success are over exposure. That is when one knows they are popular. Lord Temptation 11,209
Much ado about nothing. As if artists can do anything about controlling their level of success. Besides Gaga has already had her "flop" era with ARTPOP and she more than bounced back, she won a Grammy and sung at the Oscars. Gaga right now feels invincible.
