Rita Ora Sues Roc Nation

Rita Ora has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court that will effectively free her from Roc Nation. Ora claims that the contract she signed with Roc Nation in 2008 violates California law. The lawsuit claims that she has been orphaned by Jay-Z, because of his new efforts with Tidal and sports management. Billboard states,

"When Rita signed, Roc Nation and its senior executives were very involved with her as an artist," states the complaint. "As Roc Nation's interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives. Rita's remaining supporters at the label left or moved on to other activities, to the point where she no longer had a relationship with anyone at the company." With unmistakable references to Jay Z's new pursuits (the streaming service Tidal is mentioned), the lawsuit paints Roc Nation as a "diminished" record label with "only a handful of admittedly worthy heritage superstar artists."

Apparently, Rita has been self-funding all of her performances and recording costs.

Rita is suing on the basis of the seven-year rule which states that artists are not responsible to perform duties cited in the contract seven years after being signed. However, this rule has since been altered in a way that companies can sue individuals for damages if they do not release the number of albums cited in the contract during that time. Though the situation is a little more tricky with Rita, so I suggest reading the Billboard article below to fully understand it.

I knew something was off with the way her promotional schedule was working. :omg:

Hopefully she will be able to break free and somehow shine light on Kesha's lawsuit.

Those things aren't at odds.

Oh... I thought because she said "As Roc Nation's interests diversified, there were fewer resources available and the company suffered a revolving door of executives."... But she probably meant other artists

Jay only got her because she was a spitting image of Rihanna and we all know it. She sounded like Beyonce and looked like Rihanna.

Yep, you're right, my bad. I thought they had some sort of agreement or something, because most of Roc Nation's artists end up being Tidal exclusives (or so I thought, but I got it mixed up)

it may not be, but think of Jay Z as the parent and he's got two babies, Roc Nation and Tidal, if he's spending all his time, effort and money nurturing Tidal, than he gonna be spending less on Roc Nation, and that's where it makes the artists, like Rita, suffer.

Kesha teas, tbh...but, yeah, if she's not being properly used there, let her go somewhere else and do her thing...I mean, I get why once she was seen as a "menace" to Rihanna, but that's no longer the case, so holding on to her not let her work is just petty...

Anyway, good luck for her...ya know, messing with roc nation is dangerous...
