I hope she doesn't get dragged for the 'cos we bear life' remark, people might view that as insensitive to transwomen and women who aren't fertile. Just saying. :green::green::green:

Yeah I just cringed at the comment...especially seeing as she's never had a child. Her point is a bit questionable.

Am I the only one who thinks her victimized speeches are getting a bit tiring? I get that she's accepting Billboard Woman of the Year......but in all honesty there are MANY other careers in this world that suffer from gender discrimination in such a worse way than this. I don't see Adele or Madonna continuously whining about it years after their breakthrough....

Also this longer preview of the performance, which was already posted by @Didymus in the TIHTY snippet thread, but I just wanted to repost it for those who don't look in that thread anymore :).

Im sorry but she sounds so out of tune or something. If i was randomly channel surfing and caught this performance, i would think whoever is singing is terrible. I hate saying that but its really unpleasant to listen to. Gaga could do so much better. Its a shame.

Honestly though, i think this song is just very emotionally difficult for Gaga to sing. She is probably fighting back tears the whole time which makes it extremely difficult to sing well.

Maybe she's been pregnant and had an abortion...That's certainly a strong theory related to the beginning of her career and "Marry the Night." Gaga isn't always the most forthcoming person... Fans knew about her experience with rape long before she flat out said "I was raped" and came out with this song. (Im not saying she 100% for sure had an abortion, but it seems possible  )

Anyway, I don't see this as "victimized" at all, it is true what she said about gender stereotypes and what not, so events like this are to celebrate people overcoming popular expectations and beliefs and self-actualizing, etc. etc. Talking about your oppression (which comes from society as a whole, not individual actions) is not "whining" :air:

Also, "there are worse things going on in the world" is never a good argument to discredit how good or bad an isolated event is :rip: Madonna talks about sexism as well, even saying "we still live in a sexist society" just like a few months ago :laughga: Adele came out as a feminist just LAST MONTH and talked about answering sexist questions (and part of those relating to her weight) and the sexism in the industry as well.

Basically, just no :emma:

Whispering

Gaga looks beautiful, love the red suit on her!

Her vocals sound very close to the recording, except for it is live. Have people here not heard the original?

She is singing live about the time she was raped and is also thinking about the other victims stories. You need to go watch the interview with the New York Times to see how emotional she was and is over all of this.

Are you kidding me? Madonna has never not been vocal about sexism and that's another reason to love her. And Adele doesn't have to put up with claims that she's not intelligent or the mind behind her own career. She's white, straight as can be and innocent. No one would bother giving her a hard time. What reason would they have to? She barely voices her opinion on controversial or difficult topics and her music is all about heartbreak.

When people see Gaga's work they write it off as gimmickry or corporate maneuvering. The public wants her to be beautiful but they don't want her to own her sexuality and be proud of it. They want role models but they don't want women with a strong or differing opinion from their norm. Gaga can't fit into everyone's expectations and taste and therefore she has to put up with more bullshit than Adele ever will.

I'm sure she realizes other women in different careers suffer different and sometimes worse gender discrimination than she does. But this is the BILLBOARD WOMEN OF THE YEAR awards and she has a right to speak on the issue. Just because these women are famous artists it doesn't make their issues any less important to talk about.

And I'm sorry but do you think that because she's never had a child that she doesn't have a point here? And the comment is no way ignorant to transgender issues. She wasn't speaking on what it takes to be a woman, she's only speaking of a woman's different perspective. Lets be clear, most women can bear life and men cannot. It's just one basic distinction.

'We bear life' is not only about being pregnant. To me it's the essence of femininity. We, females, are meant to bear life and we go through so many things related to that. Being pregnany is the culmination of femininity, but females go through so much before this culmination. Our bodies are very different than men's bodies. So, to me her comment makes perfect sense. You don't have to take it literally.

There are many cultures in this world that considered women a baby machine and that is all. That's sad I think is what Gaga was refering with that sentence... We live in a sexist world yet.

Who run the world? *dances like beyoncé* *brokes a leg*

well sadly not girls.  :laughga:

After the Oscar performance I think this will be the most praised performance for Gaga from GP and well that's the biggest and most important goal than we thought here. This song is powerful.

Lovely speech, I'm proud of how far she's come!

Them lips in motion are so blatantly altered, though. I hope Cynthia has slapped some sense into her!

:grr:
