Economy 52,887 Posted December 10, 2015 Share Posted December 10, 2015 http://alberta.ca/climate/oilsands-emissions.cfm The new Government of Alberta has passed a law putting a limit on Canadas oil sands emissions at 100 Megatonnes annually Under this law once the 100 megatonne mark is reached, the Province will not approve anymore expansion projects until emissions from existing oil production falls Canadas oil sands currenly emit 70 Megatones annually. However projects under contruction to begin extraction by end of decade will take it close to the maximum meaning few new projects will be approved until the industry can reduce emmissions Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Good question. The environmentalist movement seems to focus solely on the Oil and Energy sector. What about all the other pieces of the economy that 'use' said fossil fuels? Reduction in emissions from electricity and transportation. But a lot of electricity that is generated goes to manufacturing and products and those products need to get from production to consumption. Coal is a bigger polluter than oil and we have more practical substitutes for coal than we do crude oil Im not sure why they target oil specifically so much the oil sands production is highly toxic tho cuz they burn huge amounts of Natural Gas to heat up water to seperate oil from sand 20% of Canadas emissions come directly from oil sands Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If i recall the numbers correctly Oil Extraction = 6% of GDP (not counting economic ripple effects) Oil Sands alone = 20% of Canadas total emissions So proportionally speaking, over tripple the emissions rate of the general economy Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
