I think a problem with these super talented vocalists is that everyone expects them to constantly perform these extremely difficult notes all the time (because they have this ability) and it greatly increases the risk of damage. Every performance era they are expected to up their game vocally and I imagine with too many strenuous performances may prove too tiring for them to perform as accurately as they should. Ariana is smart to want to protect her voice.

Whitney had the alcohol and no warm ups damage her Vocal Chords, XTina used the wrong technique yet is capable of doing whistle tones. 

Mariah and Ariana both had some pretty high songs in the first two years of their career ('The Way' - 'Emotions'). Mariah carried on with Whistles, overused her voice, and in 2014 she was down with the Voice (Another factor was her divorce and manager issues) and she was off key always. 

Ariana started using the whistle tones to avoid that and the comparison to Mariah. If Ariana still would to Whistle Tones, her voice would've sounded so different now (a tour with tons of belts, falsetto etc. could damage the vocal chords). I am sure that she can use the whistle tones tho.
