2nd best selling Korean act of all time with so much popularity that it stretches nearly globally. Nearly everyone thought they were never going to take the stage ever again after the one with the red hair, Bom was caught with illegal perscription medication, which is a MASSIVE no-no in Korea. Her record label instantly yanked her from promotions and took her away from her TV show. She hasn't appeared with the group for anything like this since August 2014, she was forced into hiding, not even staying on social media. We've only gotten a few candids of when she was caught in public to know she's still alive or anything.

The main girl, CL has been branching off as a solo aritst and multiple press releases from her company have plainly stated that if things go remotely well, we might not see 2NE1 ever again. The fact that all 4 of them were at the show was kept a complete secret, they went as far as to force the biggest award show in Asia to promote/tease it as a completely solo performance. 

TLDR: These girls are so popular that they are one of the best selling girl groups of all time globally and everybody thought they had broke up and we'd never see them again.

EDIT: also it's important to note that the 2 songs they played are some of their big hits, not off their latest album, it would be like LG going on the Grammys and performing BR and PF.

Back in the day, KPOP female groups are mostly have 2 image choices: being cute, or being slutty.

When 2NE1 came, they are neither of them, their management decides for them to have another image, breaking the mold in KPOP by giving them the badass image and that really well received by many people, an image that is taboo in Korea for female to have, because being "bad" can only be for the boys only.

And today there are few more newer groups as well all older ones adopting the badass image too, thanks to 2NE1.

They give the underdogs basically a licence to be proud and confident to be themselves.

It's just that the K POP industry is so much different compared to the American industry. K POP women (most of them) literally have to do everything their label says and they have absolutely no power. If they want to do something they have to beg for it.

Thanks so much I appreciate the story. CL is the main girl with the gray hair rapping? I kind of like her sound. They seem like they have really good English also. So if they did get back together do you think they would be successful? Or are the d--gs that big of a deal? It would be such a shame for the fans.

That's CL alright.  Diplo is helping her with an upcoming US EP. CL and Bom are completely fluent in English, Bom has lived in English-speaking countries and CL is just a super-genius or smth and is completely fluent in like 4 languages.

If they got back together they would top the charts and sell hundreds of thousands of copies(big numbers for Korea), but it will take a while for a new album to materialize. Bom was caught leaving a record studio recently but 2NE1 takes a very long time to make their albums. In 6 1/2 years we've gotten only 2 full length Korean albums

Sounds like Adelle lol. Yea I feel like CL should def try English. I feel like there are not Asians in rap right now (especialy female. is she mostly a rapper or can she sing?

Ugh watching this videos makes me wanting them to go for American market. They have talent and big personality! I hope if they go for western media, MTV etc, they have the whole world attention and maybe even GAGA haha! Hope one day Gaga stumbled across them!

Gaga and 2NE1 have undoubtably crossed paths before. Donatella is a big fan, as is a lot of the fashion world because of CL's connections. LG headlined the Seoul Music Festival with artRAVE, 2NE1 also held a massive concert on the stage. CL's also best friends with will.i.am who did some work on ARTPOP. Also LG went through that whole asian pop phase during artRAVE and 2NE1 have sold 60 million records in Asia.

Too many close connections to LG for her to not have met or at least be familiar with them.
