I have always heard experiences about this happening, so I am not surprised, I can not see this link or video though. Is Artifact a documentary on 30 Seconds To Mars?

Wow that was shocking :udidnt: I don't understand how it works after the debt though, like how are they meant to repay the debt if working is only getting them into more debt? :omg:

They're probably forced into ad campaigns like this

Well the big money for artists is supposedly out of touring. In the video I don't see them mentioning touring gross, but I think that perhaps that is where artists earn the money to pay the debt. Although I could also see record labels taking away that money too :laughga:.

Unfortunately, not every artists is a touring artist. Especially for new artists. I mean Jared Leto sure doesn't have income related problems, but I'm 100% that Iggy Azalea is in debt especially now that her tour was cancelled. Or any pop girl that has not had a commercial impact similar to Katy, Gaga, Beyoncé or Madonna. Would explain that $10,000 meet and greet with Demi.

True, although I think that most artists, even small artists, do concerts and tours. Not all of them will be world tours, but there aren't many musicians who don't perform their music at all. Cancelled tours and such are exceptions to the rule.

That said, I imagine that the profit margin for smaller acts will be a lot more narrow, so making a living would be a lot harder. That's why the hustling and the insane performance schedules are so common at the start of a carreer, were some artists have to play multiple shows a night.

But things can be weird sometimes. Last year I went to see a british band called Morning Parade. They were doing a European tour (which can't be cheap), yet the venue they played where I live (the Netherlands) could only hold like 100 people at most at €15 a ticket. Almost needless to say, a while later they announced that they were going to quit the band because of financial troubles. The music business can be a weird place.

I watched this last night. I have always heard all about business from other artists, so none of it surprised me.

Wow. I had no idea the music industry was like that. How does any artist who is Gaga/Madonna/Beyonce ect level even make money? Touring? Do tours work that way too? What happens if the artist never pays off their debt?

TLC was huuuuuuuuuge yet the were broke all the time, they had to make some sort of gofundme to record their new lp :air:  and they sold millions, idk if im wrong but i think that's why Lauryn Hill stopped making music.

thats how the bussiness works. artist make so much money and get almost nothing...i just think that gaga, katy, madonan etc just got lucky and may not have problems with debts on their record lables because they were extremely successful and were able to pay off everything. but probably got nothing in return
