I think there is more criticism of AA female singers when it comes to their s-xuality. And musically, I think every AA singer is expected to do music that "fits the race," some derivative of R&B, Hip Hop, or Soul. I keep thinking back to an interview I read a long time ago where an AA singer complained about how she was expected to only sing and perform a certain style of music and only sing about certain topics because she was black. She wanted to do rock, rock pop, and alternative music. I think she also complained about how she was expected to dress and look a certain way (though I imagine that kind of branding is done with all singers, regardless of race). I think she managed to have some success despite of refusing to be molded that way but as I don't remember her name I'm guessing she wasn't in the industry long.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

She will be even be more popular imho.

There are still people out there that didn't to her music simply because she is African American regardles what she does or have achieved, albeit just very little group of people.

Do people honestly not see the racial bias in the music industry?

Black artists are all given negative labels like"thug", "racthet" and "hoe" for how they dress, talk, their subject material etc.

The general idea of beauty in women is still skinny white women. And beauty plays a vital role in making it into the industry. Being a women of color, makes it harder to become successful.

OT: Beyonce is sort of paid dust but I'm not sure if it's because of race. Why is Britney spears considered a legend while as Beyonce isn't yet, when Beyonce has had just as much smashes and every album released around the same time between Bey and Britney, Beyonce has sold more. Idk. But overall Beyonce is a very respected artist, MC being proof.

This tbh.

At least this way she can be the voice for a minority. If she were white she'd blend in with the likes of Taylor, Katy...other white pop girls that I can't think of :awkney:

She's taken pretty seriously regardless. They don't call her "Queen B" for nothing :fan:

How are Beyonce and Taylor or Katy even related? If Beyonce were white, it would be silly to compare her with the likes of those girls. :duck:

In what world is Beyoncé not taken seriously? Did I miss something?

Weird wording. But the OP does tackle a real issue, which is women and people of color have it harder in life, and in entertainment. I mean, I'm stating the obvious here.

In the eyes of a lot of the GP, all pop music runs together

It can sometimes be advantageous. In hip hop music being black is an advantage.

I'm not saying it is easier in general. But we shouldn't say it's hard in general either.

Oprah vs Ellen. Iggy Azalea vs Nicki. All examples of powerful women who made it inspite of their skin color.

It might not be fair enough, but we're on the right track. Equality has never been a buzz subject and fighting for your rights is seen as a good behavior.

I didn't ask for a free ride, I only asked you to show me a real good time.

If anything she's too praised. I think she is The Best all-around performer in the current landscape of music, I like some other voices more but she is a terrific dancer. Yet all this 'queen' worshipping is so uncalled for. She is like untouchable. She is taken too seriously, sells loads of albums because she is who she is, because and the end of the day, she hasnt had a really popular song (worldwide) since Single Ladies, and surprise nobody calls her "a flop" because of it, as they do with the rest (Not saying they should, ofc they shouldnt). Bey is waay less scrutinized.

HOWEVER, I agree with OP on other things. There is an inner silent racism and s-xism in music industry that shows clearly. They are expected to stay on r&b/hiphop/soul, always in a box, but in a very gluten-free bland box. For example, if you take the rants and negativity out of the picture, Azealia Banks has been showing how badly she has been treated and how many times they tried to water down her music to be popular.

And for people who have to start any discussion by saying that people who think differently are "little pressed twinks", in order to feel any superior: I'm not that, I like Bey's music, have bought some of her records and I dont spend my time comparing "My faves" to her. I just dont like to feel invalidated from the start.

I don't know where you think she's not taken seriously lol.  People hail her, they refer to her as Queen Bey and no it's not a "fan" thing, most ordinary fans who haven't even listened to 4 or anything before Sasha think of her as a goddess.  Each instgram post gets almost a million likes or more.  She's globally renowed as one of the most popular performers of the modern era.  She has certainly earned her spot and I think a testament to that is her album sales, touring record, and social media dominance.  Girls want to be her, guy want to be with her.  Her skin color has nothing to do with this.

Just because their is a racial bias in many areas, doesn't mean it applies in music where black have excelled for decades.

1. That only happened with the rise of rap and hip-hop in the 90's, and blacks did it themselves. Calling themselves thugs, refers to females as hoes, etc. Blacks artists from 60s-80s portrayed themselves in a much classier way. Blacks have played a big role in managing black artists since Motown.

2. Outside of high fashion, large bums have really because a thing the last 25 years. More white guys admire JLo or Bey's figure than skinny Taylor Swift. If it goes any further, white women will be getting butt implants like some do in Brazil.

3 Aside from Britney stans, I doubt many people think like that.

What?! Beyoncé is seen as one of the top artists of the 2000s. Album sales, Touring numbers, endorsements, performance opportunities, Grammys, Countless other awards and accolades are all at the top! She was just on the cover of the TIME 100 in 2014.

I don't know where you live, but in the US, she is worshipped by the general public, the music industry and publications and the media as a whole!
