Didy, please stick to debating the ideas and not the person, direct name calling solves nothing and undermines your position.... C'mon guys shape up here!

Chica did you manage to rip this performance somehow? I personally really like it and I'd like to listen to it more....but I didn't see a DL yet in the media section.

Yes I've gotten into the habit of ripping as soon as I physically see it on the webpage on the computer.

I'll UL for you

omg I don't really understand the hate for it, I kinda loved it.:pumpga: She was very emotional since the beginning, she covered her face twice and ended it with a smile of hope.

Sure some parts were not perfect, this is the first time we hear it live. But if this is her worst performance ever, lol, what should we say about some of her peers? :chica:

I guess we all hear things differently. :air:

Whispering

Okay, I listened to it a few hours ago and then sent it to a couple of close friends that are vocally knowledgeable to ask what they thought.

My impression: The performance sounds just like Gaga and like the single, except for a couple of times when she changed it up and twice on the big power notes. Whether she was emotional or something else, it caused her not to have her usual "blow the audience's hair back" moments, but it was still in tune and fine. I was expecting something different from many of the comments here, but it was a good performance and definitely still much better than the majority of artists could ever pull off in a completely stripped back performance.

My friends thought it was "moving, emotional, beautiful, shows her true talent and she was commendable for doing close to an acappela performance". I followed up and asked them if it seemed out of tune or off and got a "huh? No!" and a "not at all".

These are the facts:

. her voice is exhausted (and not just here, it already was during her first song at the event)
. it causes her to go off key more than ten times during her entire performance
. it causes her to **** up her high notes more than once
. she chose a very specific way of performing TIHTY vocally

You make a good point, but I think there is a lot to be said for the last item in your list.  Sometimes, to best express emotional lyrics, an artist forgoes the technical correctness (as in your first two points).  I really think her intent was to be moving and personal, as she was moved herself by the lyrics.  I think this performance was not meant as entertainment, but rather to express a message to a specific audience.  I think she did a good job with that.

Did they know the original song though?

I mean, she clearly does go out of tune (and not just here but throughout the entire evening) and I don't see how you need to ask vocal experts to "check" that as any idiot who knows the song well enough can hear that.

But again, before I'm showered with passive aggressive comments from everyone: I'm not saying that to put Gaga down, I just don't understand why so many fans here are uncomfortable with Gaga being human and not delivering as she usually does. There are a ton of reasons her voice could have suffered prior to the performance (as already noted many times) and it's so obvious that I don't think anyone listens to this and thinks this is a bad performance - it's abundantly clear that her voice is out of shape, end of story, no judgment whatsoever, it happens to the best.

Yes, they knew the song, as we have discussed the song in the past. That's why I sent it to them. I didn't have to send it to vocally knowledgeable people, I wanted to...to get their impression. They aren't idiots, as both are vocal professionals.

I do think she didn't have the strength in those two power spots that she usually has, but I disagree that this is a bad performance. I think she sounds good and there are only a couple of spots where she doesn't sound as strong as usual.

Just my thoughts and impressions.

I agree with everyone who doesn’t like her “Dope style” vocals.  I also don’t enjoy the heavy, drone-like, tired sounding vocals. I think when she sings songs acoustically that are extremely emotional for her, she sacrifices sounding pleasant with conveying her emotions fully. Gaga is extremely good at living through her songs, so when she sings about addiction or rape, she probably isn’t going to sound as good. She sounds like a broken person trying to get back on track. When she sings Dope, I can clearly picture a distraught woman sitting on her kitchen floor playing around with a liquor bottle trying to decide what to do. She conveys the image she wants to convey perfectly. I think this is an artistic choice for her. I’m sure she is capable of sounding more pleasant, but that isn’t her goal or intention. Its similar to a social commentary or something similar. The message is more important than the performance being enjoyable. She wants the audience to feel something. I don’t agree with this choice because the bottom line is, she is an entertainer. First and foremost, she needs to sound good. Everything else is secondary in my opinion. I also think it is very possible to sound pleasant and also have a huge impact on the audience. But, I understand what she is doing at the same time. Then again, maybe Gaga thinks that this vocal style sound good and maybe others do as well so I could be totally off base. Its all subjective really but it seems like most of us feel the same way.

not one of you is being hateful?

did you even bother reading a few pages of this topic or what?

some comments are absolutely disgusting. they're trashing gaga as if she pulled a britney vmas 2007 :wtf:

No they are not :emma: Some are saying that it weren't her best performance and that they dislike the voice she makes when trying to sound emotional.

They are not saying "she sounds like ****" or anything hateful like that :awkney: It is constructive criticism - they are saying her vocals were not good in this performance.

She doesn't need the Dope style vocals to sound emotional. She conveyed so much emotion singing Speechless and The Edge of Glory acoustically.

I have seen much worse on this forum :xtina2:

In my messy era.

I think the people who were in the room are the ones to ask.  It's one of those "you had to be there" kind of things.  She was there as a social advocate putting across her message in a personal way to the audience.  They are the ones who could tell you if they were moved.

I'm not judging too harshly.  She did a good job.  This was her first time singing TIHTY live, and the first time Gaga does a song live it's often a little rough.  Look at DWUW on X-factor vs. DWUW on The Voice.
