I agree mostly, but drop the whole "privilege" trend--I'm sure you're trying to be less abrasive to the social justice warriors on here.

It's not Nazi Germany; getting asked where your family or ancestors are from isn't exactly a pitfall anyone has to "suffer".

Not only that, but I would imagine white people would be asked the same thing. It's not as if their ancestors were born here either, unless they are Native American.

A lot of people outside the U.S. seem to find it weird when Americans say, "I'm [Blank]-American". There's this giant focus on ethnicity versus nationality in the U.S., not because we are more racist, but because we are trying so damn hard to be politically correct. I understand and am used to the culture of trying to maintain a separate identity by sub-categorizing your American citizenship, but practically speaking, it doesn't exactly fit liberal ideologies that all young people try to claim as being superior.

Privilege isn't a "trend."

No, white people are almost never asked that. An "American" is usually seen as a white person because they are the majority. No one said anything about "suffering," however a non-white person can't just say they're "American" without further explanation as most whites and blacks do, actually.

No. She said she didn't label herself as "African American," just American.

I see her point on that. White people in America almost NEVER call themselves "Eruropean American," it sounds ridiculous saying it. Some who have recent immigrants still do it or just simply strong ancestral heritage. Kind of how Gaga calls herself "Italian American" but she isn't actually Italian.

Raven was saying how you can just call yourself American and don't have to attach anything to it because we are all American.

Plus, if you think of it black Americans are 100% American and have no connection to Africa whatsoever.

Whites have the privilege of saying they're American without someone questioning them where their family or ancestors are from.

Please elaborate?

The label "African American" seems to be put in place to discriminate between the majority (whites) and everyone else. Everyone else has some "____ American" while whites freely just call themselves American. As far as I'm concerned black Americans are AMERICAN. Period. No need to label themselves as "African" if they don't want to. Most black Americans living today have no connection to Africa or African culture. anyway. The term is also illogical considering if an actual African who was WHITE came over to America no one would call them an African American. Most blacks are NOT immigrants. There is no need for an attachment to "American" such as "Hispanic American," "Asian American," which are terms for which immigrants from those areas are called or their first born children are called.

Furthermore, people go up in arms when you call someone BLACK and consider the term A-A politically correct.

I agree with you. I'm black, and I don't consider to be African-American because I'm not from Africa, nor am I educated on their culture. So I agree with that and see where Raven is coming from, as I've had the same mentality.

With that said, I think that Blacks and Africans are somewhat connected because when it boils down to it, we're all just a bunch of "..." to everyone else. No matter where you were born or what you identify as. They could'nt care less.:coffee:

Plus we all share the same ancestory.

What I've found interesting is how various blacks I know like to separate themselves from Africans. "I'm black not African" is a phrase I've heard many times before. "Black" here meaning Black American.

Africans are seen as different, especially since they are immigrants.

Africans also seem to have different values, or at least they express them differently.

But yeah I think ancestry is as far as it goes. Many of the blacks in the Americas in general were brought over by force. Over generations they've created their own culture and ideologies and have permanently separated themselves from Africa.

I've always been told that Africans look down upon Black people because they view our culture as disgraceful. They think we're lazy. And I know Black people who literally hate Africans, and of course vice versa. Its crazy when you actually think about it..

She meant that the posts from her FB page on Friday were not hers. She's not denying the thing she said on TV.

LoveandMagic

This reminds me of those popular skits by Key and Peele. The one where they are pretend college football players with crazy names. There's like six of these skits on youtube. It's hilarious!

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
