Lorde might be getting worse

I'll preface this by saying that Lorde has created 4 incredible songs in Tennis Court, 400 Lux, Team, and Still Sane that I will cherish most likely for the rest of my life. Her debut album Pure Heroine overall is great. Lorde had a unique stamp/spin on it that I can admire/respect even if I'm just a casual fan.

My issue lies with Magnets sounding like it could belong on 1989. The way she sings the word "baby" screams Taylor Swift to me and the lyrics overall do not have that Lorde punch I've grown to love and seek. Now maybe Disclosure wrote the lyrics and Lorde just sang it and I'm being ignorant? I don't know but I'm not happy with this direction she is heading in tbh.

I would hate to be that person that gets hung up and hard over her debut album to the point I hate everything that comes after it (like the Lana stans obsessed with Born to Die) but I can totally see it happening.

I mean the Magnets video/song being about Lorde as the other woman and low key depending on a guy? I'm just in total shock because I really didn't see Lorde being that kind of person. Not that it's not normal I've been there and will continue to be a bit lol.

I thought she was above it all and in a very private relationship with her nerdy normal looking guy. Now it seems like she's making music to be on the charts with Selena Gomez and company.

I guess I'm just struggling to understand where this song fits into Lorde's discography and the person I thought her to be.

I hope this is just a one off and doesn't reflect what will be on her next album.

Thoughts? Cool ways to drags me?

P.S.

I know I sound too serious a lot of the time. I'm cool with Lorde doing what she wants I just wanted to voice my concern on this music forum.

Eh. I never also like her music esp the way she sings and her live performance.  I'll always prefer Lana over her.

People grow up and their outlook on life/relationships change too. You can't expect her to stay the same. Besides i dont think its fair to judge her upcoming album based on one new song. I'm still hella stoked to see what she offers next.

That's not what the video is about though

And she said in a recent interview that her new album will be similar to Pure Heroine but more refined in sound.

I actually really like Magnets :music:

Yellow Flicker Beat from the Hunger Games soundtrack was a jam too. I think she is getting better if anything.

its not like her music was ever that good though

I, too, was a bit underwhelmed by Magnets because it doesn't have that Lorde-ish sound. Disclosure and Lorde are both artists I admire, so you can imagine the excitement when I read that they were going to collaborate.

However, I really like the video and don't know what everyone's problem is. Lorde is, even though she's already very mature for her age, still growing up and evolving as an artist. She keeps her relationship private, but that doesn't mean that she can't act as a certain character in music videos or try to walk on new ground as an artist.

What is the song and video about then?

I must've been so disgusted and disappointed I blacked out. :rip:

It's about the guy being an abusive husband so the wife hires Lorde to seduce/take him out.

I guess my major problem is that it feels like Lorde trying to be a popstar and fit in. Magnets doesn't feel genuine. Pure Heroine felt like Lorde being Lorde. Sorry if I sounded too harsh in the OP. :emma:

Mess, then I didn't even finish watching the MV. :lmao:

Sorry Lorde please spare me from your wrath.

Some artists like to evolve or try new grounds once in a while. Also this is not her song, it's just like Foxes on Clarity and HAIM on Pray To God.

EDIT: The title says "Lorde might be getting worse". Do you think she was bad before Magnets?

If anything Taylor is the one who sounds like Lorde. A lot of the material in 1989 sounds like it was inspired by Lorde.
