Born This Way deserved the Grammy over 21

21 deserved the Grammy because it was a cultural phenomenon. She kinda revolutionized pop radio, and paved the way for the minimalistic trend we've seen these last two years. She made singing without autotune and Dr. Luke cool again. BTW deserved several grammys for sure, but 21 deserved AOTY.

They award popularity I guess. 

I'll go more in-depth why I believe 21 deserved it more. BTW and 21 both had a huge impact however BTW only impacted this fanbase, while 21 impacted the current trend in music at it's time. It's the reason why many mainstream artists like Rihanna recorded songs like Stay and Bruno Mars with If I Were Your Man, John Legend - All of Me, Sam smith, and really the entire reason we have lorde, and that impact is an impact on a wider scale than  what BTW did.  21 was the precursor to the more organic sound radio has now (at least compared to before 2011). 

Maybe BTW is a more creative album but I think that 21's impact is a greater accomplishment then having the slightly more creative album

21 deserved AOTY over BTW, but i also think that TEOG deserved to win something. It's an amazing song. No other female artist can compose something like that

You know what? I completely agree. After all these years I still believe BTW was a solid album with a clear message and pristine yet multilayered execution. 

BTW had a once in a life time concept and eclectic mix that CHALLENGED 2011. 

21 was a once in a life time COMMERCIAL juggernaut that appealed to the GP's cliche unrequited love strings.

I guess it just depends on what you value as a music listener.

At the time, it was difficult to imagine anything but 21 winning. But in retrospect, I agree. Born This Way is the more unique and creative album.  But prosperity is what ultimately matters, and both works will be remembered and regarded for a long time.
