Star Wars predicted to open with $615M worldwide

When Disney revives the long slumbering Star Wars franchise on December 18, The Force Awakens will take the global tentpole opening to a history-making high. How high? Many are already predicting a record $615M worldwide opening, and they have plenty of reason to be confident in that number. The first Star Wars in 1977 gave birth to the blockbuster era of filmmaking — and grosses.

As we come off a summer where Jurassic World set the record with a $524.4M global opening and a record $1B haul in 13 days — the fastest film to cross that mark — experts believe the seventh Star Wars film, a long-anticipated sequel to 1983’s Return Of The Jedi, will surpass the dinosaurs’ feat and recoup its estimated $200M production cost in historic time.

In a digital world where screen counts can be increased at a last moment’s notice to meet theater demand of walk-up business, a record opening of $300M stateside and $315M abroad is possible for Force Awakens. Insiders say that in any given 20-plex in December, Force Awakens will be on at minimum 10 screens. Like Jurassic World‘s success this summer, the key driving force to Force Awakens remains its multi-generational appeal. Disney has smartly planted the film in the year-end holiday corridor when families head to the cinema in bulk. The expectation is that Force Awakens will play in north of 4,000 theaters on at least 10,000 U.S. screens stateside and in every overseas territory. All except for China, which has a blackout period on Hollywood films during December. Both Furious 7 and JW played respectively on giant global screen counts of 14,687 and 23,886 in their first frames, with the latter including China.

Honestly, I speak from experience as a Little Monster when I say that it's bad to make astronomical predictions this early, because anything under that will look like a flop.

Not a doubt in mind that it will slay.

I pray it's a REALLY solid effort so the hardcore Star Wars fans won't discourage my excitement.

I agree to a certain extent, and the CEO of Disney kind of does too since he downplayed predictions at D23.

But this is totally normal for blockbusters like this, tracking starts super super early and there are companies specifically for that.

I don't know if they are that off the mark tbh. Hype is HUGE and this is like the biggest movie event in years

Yeah, a lot of thought goes into these predictions. I just remember how the second Avengers movie was predicted to do like 1.7 billion worldwide and get a higher opening than it actually did. It had a great run nonetheless, but it looked worse because it didn't live up to expectations.

Incredible numbers, for sure, but in the end I don't really care anything about that. My concern is if the films will be any good and restore the integrity of the series. I've noticed the film makers and Disney been making a point to separate this film completelyfrom the prequels. This is both good and bad. Good, because the prequels were awful and destroyed a lot of story/character canon so they should want to distance themselves from them as much as possible, and bad, because these films should stand on their own. Star Wars fans want a good story and characters to root for. I've also noticed some pandering to the OT fan base. Either its a genuine gesture of good will, or Disney doing good PR.

Sorry guys, I'm a bit of an elitist snob when it comes to the Star Wars films. I grew up with the old VHS converted tapes of the original, theatrical versions and they were a big impact on my childhood. I am extremely opinionated when it comes to both trilogies and have a hard time keeping my opinion to myself. Forgive me in advance if I become a little...aggressive...with this topic.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
