On August 15th 1977 an astronomer Jerry Ahmen picked up a strong signal burst that lasted exactly 72 seconds. He was so exited by it that he wrote "wow" on the paper hence where the name "wow signal" originated from The signal had simmilarities to what a couple of physicists had theorized 18 years earlier would signify alien chatter. Despite repeated efforts astronomers at the observatory were never able to pick up the same signal again, it was a 1 time single burst Almost 40 years later, there is debate on whether or not we should respond to the coordinates where signal came from. Now, seriously, there's a high chance it was nothing so it would be a waste of time and money to reply and then it was nothing, so they should only reply if it there is a way they can tell it was not something accidental. Economy 52,962 Posted August 1, 2015 Author Share Posted August 1, 2015 I am assuming it does cause it's not even that cheap to send signals to the other side of the world, imagine how it must cost to send signals to the other side of the galaxy... that could be for totally different reasons tho... signals we send on earth tend to be for telecommunication, internet etc... its suppostu interact back and forth and must be controlled and use many lines which have companies supporting them, then teres taxes etc to simply send one out into space should be as simple as using big satelite dishes and sending a strong burst... and space doesnt have atmosphere like our Earth to scatter signals as much However I wonder just how strong were able to make them thats the only thing. For a signal to be strong enough to travel thousands of light years and despite weakening still being hearable would require huge strength Earth has sent a signal to the center of the galaxy before and it will take 30,000 light years to get there if they sent a signal there, theres no reason we cant send it to these coordinates where the 1977 signal was picked up from Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I've always hoped that we'd fine some form of alien life in my lifetime, even if it's just pond scum on Europa or intelligent beings from Zeta Reticuli unless aliens come to us, ive always suspected the first alien life we will find will be bacterial or something like that... the more complex a life form is, the more factors had to be just right to allow them to evolve that way although its hard to say for sure, i think for every 1 planet or habitat with intelligent life, theres probably hundreds that only have bacteria or simple organisms plants etc Just look at Earth... we got great area in goldilocks zone, perfect mass to keep atmosphere stable, one of few planets in solar system with magnetic field to protect us from solar rays etc etc etc etc Despite so many unlikely factors, and so much life on earth, only 1 species (humans) turned out even remotely close to being intelligent enough to create a society and advance. At least so far There must be tones of life out there. I think we would have to be a fool to believe we are the only species of intelligence is such a vast universe (although I am giving major side eye at the History channel trying to insinuate aliens built every major structure on our planet - just stop). Of course, there could be some other natural reason for the signal, but I would be very interested in finding out. Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax." Of course, there could be some other natural reason for the signal, but I would be very interested in finding out.thats what they tried to rule out. although the signal was sent in a perfect 1420MZ frequency.... normaly natural frequencies are more erratic and contain multiple frequency strengths like 1420mz is the frequency hydrogen emmits (also the most common element in the universe). Some would say if aliens wanted to communicate, it makes sense to use what represents the most common element known to any race... on the other hand others would argue if some natural phenomenon involving frequencies caused some unexplained burst, then it makes sense that this one would be the most likely one since hydrogen is the most common every element when hit with energy bounces back a faint frequency, thats how we know what elements make up some planets or stars... hydrogen happens o be the most common but again, detected signals generally u dont get 1 burst as strong as this one, and normally it is not in a single frequency which makes this one the most suspiciouis detected signal of all time... but because they never found it again and were never able to re-evaluate it, its hard to reach a conclusion Also the area of space the signal came from has been in over 100 studies and seen in detail... nothing out of the ordinary appeared to be there Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
