I literally love this song, her voice smooth and s-xy

Such a mellow and groovy song. This is the Janet I've missed all these years, Queen.

Rarely I stop a song at first listen, but what a weak start is has. I had to do it. Maybe I will listen when I watch the video, if it gets one.

Eh, it's pretty good, but is it LEAD SINGLE material? Not really.

Go back to 1993 and I'm sure you'd feel the same way about her releasing That's The Way Love Goes as the first single off janet. This is Janet's first new song in five years. Lighten up.

Actually, yes it is. It gets right back to her roots and harks back to her quality records. The last two albums she made tried really hard to be pop and left R&B as a sidethought. I think with this album shes getting back to what she does best and with a point of view thats real and possibly even socially conscious. Music being in an R&B place naturally gives her an edge.

I wish US music trends, just once in the past 20 years, had allowed this Janet to make a return.

Her best song from her best album

Imo this is one of her WORST songs.

I think her best album is definitely The Velvet Rope and Janet comes a close second. Her new song harks back to that era of her music and she seems to be alluding to the social consciousness of Rhythm Nation as well.

You want something different from her, you want a revival of her industrial funk. I don't really relate to that.

And also, I completely disagree with your notion that shes pandering to the current R&B trend. Because first of all, she is the inspiration behind current R&B trends to begin with. She can't be pandering to something she revolutionized herself. All of these women from Jhene to Tinashe to Ciara owe something to Janet Jackson. I think the current music landscape is allowing her to come back strong in her true form as opposed to her last 2 records.

Instead of pulling a Madonna or Mariah and trying to be cheap and youthful (or Damita Jo, 20 YO, Discipline tbh) shes playing it real and understated for the first time since the 90s. I dig/respect that. I can't fathom why others don't notice that as well, but the critics seem to agree with me.

I actually heard this on the radio... and I rarely listen to the radio. I think Gay Jesus was subconsciously behind it all.

That was the first time I listened to the song in full. Before that, I felt kinda "meh" that she decided to release something very mellow as the lead single. I was expecting a dance song... but now, I'm completely on board. I respect that she's keeping it lowkey so far. No need to pander to those who only care about music from the past ten years.

At her Control and Rhythm Nation peak she was known as a dance artist, just like Madonna, Kylie, and Paula Abdul.

After 1996 she went solidly R&B to keep up with trends, but was unable to flurish in the 00's like Madonna and Kylie. Ironically, Janet's image was classier when she was dancet, and she tackled serious themes about race in Rhythm Nation.

That's because Nipplegate (NSFW link) caused her music and music videos to be blacklisted. It's unfair to not take that into account, considering it was THE reason why she didn't flourish. Let's not forget that Janet started the 2000s off STRONG with three hit singles. If the wardrobe malfunction hadn't happened, Janet could've continued to be as relevant as Madonna in the US.

Notice that her album sales have been in steady decline since Janet in 1993, and it and Control and Rhythm Nation are he 3 biggest sellers. Every album since has been a drop off, with 1997 and 2004 the biggest.

Madonna and Kylie, on the other hand, had comeback moments where the world went "hey she's back and on top again!" Janet's decline, in some ways, parallels MJ's after History in 1995..

So you're saying that Janet would've flopped even if Nipplegate didn't happen?
