I find cultural sensitivity in the USA to be quite overblown.

You have intentional racism and actions/words that can be misconstrued as racism.

Showing up with blackface on halloween pretending to be an ethiopian maid is racism.

Dressing up at an awards show in a geisha costume is not, no matter how inaccurate it may be.

This. It's so ****ing over the top.

As somebody else has pointed out, western filmmakers, musicians, writers etc. have been inaccurately referencing ancient Japanese traditions for years now. There was no racist intent behind Katy's performance, it clearly came from a place of appreciation, and I think people need to lighten the **** up.

If you wanna talk about actual cultural appropriation, let's talk Madonna's Nothing Really Matters video.

(Im not a Katy fan at all, but not an bandwagon-idiot either)

That being the case, that Asian culture has been misrepresented and appropriated for so long, we should now know better than to dabble in this.

Madonna, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Gwen Stefani; there's an endless list of white performers that opt to appropriate cultures they don't belong to for their means.

This is silly. You're advocating cultural isolationism and racial segregation, intentionally or not.

Traditions and beliefs are going to be twisted in the long run. That is the entire point of globalization. That is the essence of multiculturalism.

As long as their intent is innocent, people should be able to do what they wish within limits set by society as a whole.

I KNEW people would attack for her performance for that, lol. When it's an obvious cultural thing... its likely for people to be offended someway.

That's not what I'm advocating at all.

There is a method to respect and admire a culture without wearing it as a costume for entertainment that you take off when it's over.

"Hey, look at me! I'm not boring! Watch me as I don this costume in a bid to appear exotic," is what Katy Perry is doing here.

Your last statement can be an issue though. If a society deems it to be innocent, then you have no problem with nations placing their own limits, like Russia. After all, for many of them, the idea behind these gay laws is to "protect children." Seems innocent enough, right? Not on topic, i know, but that came to mind.

In your third statement, you are actually summarizing the entirety of pop culture.

This is the intent. She is using a foreign culture in order to do display something (jn this case her single) in a way that is unusual to the local audience. That's it. There is no agenda behind it. She is not mocking it. She is using it.

This is not that different from Gaga using Middle Eastern musical beats in Aura or Central American ones in Americano.

Are aural influences acceptable compared to visual ones?

We can go on and on about this but in the end we need to recognize that energy spent on misconstrued racism is wasted and as long as foreign cultures exist, people will get it wrong, and we have to deal with it.

Otherwise, the only way to combat it is through legal enforcement, and that would just kill multiculturalism and expression completely.

Woah no no no no no.

Read: "limits set by society as a whole"

Homophobia is definitely outside that limit. This is a whole different discussion that merits more philosophical discussion that I am keen to avoid on Gagadaily, especially when homophobia is such a hot topic on the world stage.

Wearing a kimono in an attempt to recreate Asian culture is not, however, a pressing topic and is definitely not something to condemn.

But that's the issue. Why does she get to use it? Why is my culture something to be used? It's not a prop but it may seem like one to you, which trivializes it.

Because we are human beings with free will and if someone decides to put on a kimono (or in Katy's case, a messy hyrid-kimono-thing) for a song performance - she can.

Im sure SHE doesn't think of the clothes she wore that night as "props", nor do I. They're clothes. She's not allowed to use aspects from other cultures in her performances? Bull****. Everyone - If your intention if pure and artistic, then DO WHAT YOU WANT (with my body) bye.

The answer is simple: Your culture is not being targeted in any specific way.

Globalization and the inevitable unification of the human species on the planetary scale is going to lead to a confluence of cultures.

As such, people of different cultures will appropriate others. That is perfectly normal and understandable. It is also understandable that others will not appreciate that appropriation. Unfortunately, in the information age, this is the way of things.

I'm sorry you feel that way. And that almost sounds like a fire break that firefighters use but i digress. It is nearly 2 am here and my minority self has to go to sleep so i can wake up and greet a world that would never ever judge me on my brown skin alone. In any case, i doubt you considered this fruitful but to quote Lisa Simpson (or any other Simpson for that matter): "meh." That's alright.

Ok you're right, let's all fight racial insensitivity with sweeping racial judgement! Problem solved! I mean, firefighters do it, right?

Good job thread, we solved racism. You just have to hate on and generalize white people, easy!

Hi there. I'll believe white people are victims of racism when they are declared 3/5ths of a person in legal documents. Then I'll believe it exists.

You can. You can have your opinion. It doesn't make it right.

Unfortunately, I can't change your opinion and I don't want to. I just hope to shed some light on things you may have missed.
