I think that's you seeing what you want to see and trying to score a cheap point with it than what's actually happening  And just like Miley at the VMAs, if people are talking about Katy, but negatively, then good for her.

the reason i said that is because all little monsters started mocking katy once again.always trying to discredit other artists.and so far when gaga was negatively commented ppl here said controversy queen and get that publicity:)why should it be any different when it happens to other artists?

This is not about the international community. This is about the Asian American community here. WE are here. WE have grown up here being bullied by the rest of you for our food, our clothing, and the traditions we attempt to celebrate with our loved ones. WE are the ones who had to feel ashamed of our parents or grandparents for not being “American†enough. WE are the ones who hated our “flat faces†or “slanted†eyes or “smelly†lunch food.

This is a really huge generalization, and it strikes me as the exact opposite of a progressive and rational way of looking at these issues. Neither asian americans nor "the rest of you" should be lumped together as collective groups like this.

people just get offended over every damn thing nowadays  not racist, and this is ****ty that they are giving this attention when they are more actual issues of racism in the world.

It's like wearing a Native American headdress or dressing up like a "Slutty Savage"

No, it's more like an Asian or European dressing up as a cowboy or a football cheerleader for an American themed performance. There is nothing sacred about Asian clothing the way some Natives view headdresses.

So when Asian Americans are telling you that it’s racist, and you try to trump our words with those from across the seas, shut up. Seriously. Shut up. Our parents when they came here were from across the seas, and you didn’t give a sh*t about their words when they came here. You did your best to silence them with your hate.

And before you come to eat me alive, know that these are d2fang's words

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Someone has an unhealthy chip on their shoulder.

I've always admired Asian more than any minority because they are good citizens, generally make successes of themselves, and don't play the racial victim card. Too bad d2fang tries to spoil this.

Most of them have come in the last few decades (after the bad old days of real racism), and they are well represented in lucrative professions. Japanese culture has been seen as cool since at least the 70's.

Racism isn't over, clearly. The tumblr quote you posted is extremely racist, for example.

How so?

Because white people are still individuals, we are not collectively culpable or responsible for every other white person's attitudes or behaviors throughout all time. Yet the quote you posted conflates all white people and the actions of all white people, which is racist. Maybe not racist by the neologism definition of racism popular on Tumblr (the one that centers around privilege), but its racist in the sense of judging and categorizing people by their skin color, racial identity, or ethnic heritage above all else. And that's wrong, and I daresay much more harmful in reality than any cultural appropriation.

The bullies who made fun of that quoted person for being Asian are not Katy Petty, and Katy Perry is not those bullies just because she is white too. Yet that writer lumps them, or us, all together as "YOU" (YOU did this, then YOU did that). When you realize that flaw then everything they're saying falls apart- its all based on that ****ty, racist assumption. Judge individuals, even Katy Perry, by their own actions and not their race!

(and btw I don't like Katy Perry even the tiniest bit, so don't think I'm defending her as a "stan" or anything)

Real racism is instutionalized in law, and involved a majority that dislikes or looks down on a minority. That is no longer the case. Just because a few rogue individuals dislike Jews or Mormons, or resent pretty girls, or disdain short guys, or hate while people, doesn't mean society as such is prejudiced against them.

Whatever prejudice Japanese and Chinese face is more akin to that faced by Jews in America than by blacks. Hell, the Irish immigrants of the mid-19th century were treated worse.

I can't help but feel that oftentimes white peoples' feelings are prioritized over subtle and blatant racism against non-whites. Hmm.

I feel like my feelings about racism are summed up in this quote from MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail, taken from here: http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/letter-from-birmingham-city-jail-excerpts/

"...I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White citizens’ “Councilor†or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to “order†than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can’t agree with your methods of direst action†who paternistically feels that he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a “more convenient season.†Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

I suspect that people wish the "Race Card" and racism discussions like these would end because there is this preference of order over justice, basically saying "shut up and be grateful for the scraps of food I snuck for you while I was feasting."

That's how it feels. And if you don't agree, then that's fine, I guess. Good day (or night, as it is here) to you.

None of that really has anything to do with what I said. I didn't even mention the "race card" or anything to do with shutting up to keep the order.

My point is simple: Races are not monolithic entities, and so they can't be collectively responsible or culpable for individual's attitudes or behaviors. That's it. That attitude is harmful to everyone, white or not- my objection to it has nothing to do with prioritizing white people.

Not to generalize too far, but this is the exact same problem I always encounter trying to have fruitful discussions with internet "social justice" advocates. Parroting rhetoric, memes, quotes, or ideology is easy but actually thinking through these issues, for example actually reading and understanding my simple point against racism, seems beyond your grasp.

I didn't get why Gaga made that comment during the show, other than playing on the name. But now, reading this thread, I hope it wasn't somehow meant as a dig at Katy.

I never really paid any attention to the "American" in "American Music Awards"; I never thought it meant anything. I still don't. Foreign artists aren't excluded. It's about popular music in America, but so are the Billboard Awards, the Grammies, and the VMAs.

It wasn't. She was asked on the red carpet if she could give any hints at her performance and she said the same thing "It's an American themed performance." with a coy grin. It was planned and rehearsed that way.
