Vernier 3,786
Beyonce marketed herself well. End of. We constantly hear about how meticulous Beyonce is with her work and how tightly controlled she keeps her image. This sort of thing couldn't happen with Gaga or Rihanna or any other pop girl because they effectively gave a large part of their image to the public. Tweeting constantly about what they think and what they are doing. Meanwhile, Beyonce kept her mouth shut, worked on her album, filmed 17 music videos released them all with no interviews and no discussion. The only side you EVER see of Beyonce these days is tightly controlled. Her image isn't that multifaceted (and can't be that multifaceted, because it is so controlled) but it doesn't need to be because her image is so strong. Artistic, legendary, iconic, powerful, flawless Beyonce. That's the brand Beyonce has created with this tightly controlled image, and it is a strong brand. This IS a unique marketing strategy that could only work for a Beyonce like figure. Someone like Gaga markets herself differently, she chose to connect intimately with her fans (and that works for her) but in doing that she has to let go of a bit of control when it comes to her image. She has to show vulnerability and weakness in order to seem relatable, she has to constantly communicate her thoughts and what she is doing in order to maintain a relationship with her fans (through twitter mostly). Each time she does that the media/public start to create an idea of what Gaga is like. Beyonce only gives you the opportunity to form an opinion of her through what she releases, and that IS tightly controlled. Beyonce has a stronger image because it is more controlled. Gaga drops a single along with a video telling viewers not to buy the single because she is irrelevant and has faded and is a flop while also telling people not to buy the album the single is from because she is over. The conversations around ARTPOP and Applause tend to be about how she is performing to comparison to Roar/Prism. How are her first week sales? She helped contribute to that conversation because of a lack of image control. Beyonce drops an album complete with all the music videos without any interviews or promo, limiting any outside variables from effecting how she wants people to view her brand. She also manages to shift conversation away from first week sales and comparisons by releasing in a unique way. How much is she supposed to sell first week? She released it suddenly without warning and only has a couple of days within the charting week. But because she is a big star she is selling well, that seems impressive because you can't really compare this release to any others this year. It doesn't matter if the sales are THAT impressive or not, they SEEM impressive and that helps her brand which only helps her in the long run. Especially when it comes to touring (and we have seen her increase dramatically as a touring force). This is an amazing post I've been looking for a way to put into words why this wouldn't have worked for Gaga and the bolded parts sum it up perfectly :applause: Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn
