I think it would've done okay. Partition and Drunk in Love were pretty successful so it would've been good promo.

and I'm pretty sure her team would've had good promo for the album anyways.

mmm Partition wasn't very successful

DIL did ok.

It wouldn't have done nearly as well in my opinion. The hype generated from the surprised released would've made so many people impulse purchase.

Oh yes. It's not radio friendly, it's not very catchy, and lyrically it's kind of stupid.

Let's call a spade a spade.

If it weren't for the unannounced release, where essentially, the music has to speak for itself before people decide to buy it, I think it would have been a flop. She had a really good year in show biz in 2013 and people fell for the hype and just bought the album. I was one of them. I've literally listened to the album in entirety 3 times, and the 2nd and 3rd time were just me giving it one more chance.

The singles' success was lackluster; Drunk in Love was the only smash hit so far. I would definitely say that her name sold this album. It was sort of a mystery gift that everyone wanted to open! I think if she opt'd to traditionally release her album, her team would have had to be more careful with the single choices: XO, Partition and Pretty hurts would have had to be reconsidered.

i think it would have had more longevity because the singles would have performed better with anticipation for videos and hype....all the hype around it sort of died a week later because it was all released at once

Anyways to answer the question, the album would have sold around the same even without the surprise release but most of the sales came from the first week because of the hype it created when she dropped it. I feel like the sales would've been more spread out w/o that.

The album was huge but the singles did really poorly when comparing it to how the album did. Even ARTPOP's singles were bigger.

To be fair, Beyonce never really had any singles that were that radio friendly to begin with. Even the few that were already had the music video out, arguably one of the biggest things that helps push a song publicly after the actual songs release.

She did have the hype of the Super Bowl, Pepsi and H&M commercials behind her. She had been strengthening her brand-awareness for a while.

It would have done well, but I think the surprise release made it an even bigger event.

why?

Once the album was released, even though it was huge, that was it. No songs to build hype up to to help push the album. No music videos to promote and help build up interest. Like Arturo said earlier, it started out with a bang but then after that there was nothing left to keep it going.

It would have done better if she didn't release all the videos on the same day but only the songs, then release video by video for single.
