Koreku 2,387
it's sad that people will label this as a publicity stunt. Coming out and being who you are as LGBT is very hard in this judging world, but I'd imagine being famous makes it 10x harder. You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you. DrewStevens 5,249
I will try to be clear, but I am on break at work, so limited time to work with. I'm not talking about physical force here, but psychological. Of course, I am not talking about adult or self aware individuals who know this about themselves as they know they breathe and eat. The reason I bring up youths or teenagers (under 18 years), is because their minds are still developing and the brain reacts to traumatic experiences in various ways. Bullying is a type of trauma, but they are other sources of abuse (like from parents, family members, teachers, coaches, ministers, priests, and etc). The mind can be conditioned to accept or reject things about themselves based on a mixture of positive and negative conditioning. For example, let's say a mother had a baby boy, but she really wanted a girl for whatever reason and proceeds to treat a boy as if he was a girl. Another example is a coach who treats a trainee like a girl cause he's "not manly enough" for the team.I'm not even going to get into how rape affects people in the extreme case. These are hypothetical examples that illustrate that the subject of gender isn't always black and white. It's great to embrace s-xual identity from an acceptance and social equality standpoint and I support Jenner's decision. However, I can see how this sort of thing could confuse fragile minds out there effected by trauma. There's more to this life than a show or slogan. And the real world isn't pretty in many respects. I've seen this argument so many times coming from people who argue that "gay lifestyle" shouldn't be normalized on the media. I respect your opinion but this argument makes no sense for me. aaronyoji 2,055
Did you just marginalize a minority in favor of another minority? You know, transgender folks were considered a Very small minority at one point. Everyone has to deal with their own identity **** their entire lives. Why do people insist that their entire lives are more important that the entire lives of others? Everyone is equal or that is the ultimate goal, right?you sound like one of those people who'd like to pretend everything's equal until it is, but guess what it doesn't happen out of complacency. transgender rights gets this wave of specific coverage a la laverne cox and her success on orange is the new black, because they are not fully equal or seen as such in the zeitgeist yet. caitlyn here is put on a platform so that things can be leveled. its not to disregard others with different identity issues, and its ignorant to try and make it about that. I keep thinking you are playing devil's advocate here and any minute you are going to turn this argument on its head and point out that these are the exact same arguments people use against gays being out and proud. These are the same statements that people use when arguing against gay marriage or other equal rights for the gay community. They are the same statements people use when they protest against gay people being teachers or coaches. "OMG...if the children are around gay people, respect them or even idolize them (as artists, actors, sports heroes, etc.)....next thing you know....our kids will all turn GAY!!" When the truth is, if the kid is gay...he/she is gay! No one is going to "make him or her turn gay". However, having gay celebs, teachers, politicians, etc. can help gay kids feel more positive growing up. Knowing that other people like them are accepted in society and in the media can only be positive! Bruce Jenner transitioning isn't going to convince anyone to do the same, who isn't a transgendered individual in the first place. What it may do, however, is bring positive attention and acceptance and perhaps start to reach some of these fragile young children, teens and adults who are at a mind-boggling danger of committing suicide. ***More than 50% of Transgender youth will have had at least one suicide attempt by their 20th birthday.***
