I thought Just Dance was a sleeper hit?

Yes, it took forever to go anywhere but it did get to #1 on its own and was all over radio... Poker Face was put on radio and hit big after that happened.  I just mean it's not like Poker Face happened and people were left to investigate Just Dance on their own time... if they had a radio they already knew about Gaga and Just Dance.

Wow, I never realized it took the song so long to even chart. But knowing how Gaga works, she basically went into every bar, every club, every radio station she could go to in order to promote the song. Didn't she even sing on an Ikea parking lot? It's a long way to the top, but she made it. Some younger artists should take notice.

Well, Just Dance did reach the #1 spot AFTER the release of Poker Face, so PF definitely boosted it in some way. I had never realized all this before.

Gags explained this, she had to fight like hell to get the radio to play her first few singles and she says she owes it all to the gay community for requesting her music from THE FAME that was originally viewed as not radio friendly, she attributes it all to the gays and the gay community phoning in and requesting her music and buying her album.

I even read in a book titled, "The Meteoric Rise of Lady Gaga" or something like that that she recorded a type of ad/promotion for every radio station in the United States when she was trying to get radio to play Just Dance.

The type of ad/promotion I'm referring to is the type I listened to on my local radio station.  For example, she recorded something like this....  "This is Lady Gaga and you're listening to 96.3 FM, B96 - Chicago"

Now that is what you call dedication and hard work.

I don't care what you think about unless it is about me.

That's really 9 months omg. I never realized it was that long. She could have had a baby in that time.

Yes, it is surprising how long it took.  This interview from December 15, 2008 was just after Just Dance had become a huge hit:

still hoping the next Lady Gaga and her Just Dance's slow rise phenomenon will happen to Charli XCX :neyde:

I mean, her True Romance album is amazing and full of bops (although I'm kind of tired of her music by now :laughga:)

she deserves to be on top, especially considering nowadays pop music being such a snoozefest.

Finally!!!

"YOU USED TO BE SO KIND, I NEVER KNEW YOU HAD SUCH A DIRRTY MIND".

She also did something special on radio for Yoü and I - I think she re-recorded parts of the song, replacing "Nebraska" with the name of other states. I've never heard those special radio versions online, so this might be a myth, maybe someone here knows more about this than I do.

THat's correct! I don't think any of them were officially released but they were definitely sent to radio (I have a few state radio rips in my collection, I'm sure @ChicaSkas has more).

Wow, if you were willing to send those my way, I'd be very pleased!

Because she was still unknown, it took some time for it to start going viral.
