LePetitGAGABLover 21,234
Was it the music, the promotion, the singles, her costumes, her performances?? I'm confused as to why this album is Gaga's best-selling album. Maybe because it's so basic that the GP bought it.

Checkers 3,515
Because she was so different and mysterious for a "brand new" artist. That, and her songs were deliberately made to be catchy pop hits that would capture the world's attention.

Mills 446
She's new and relatively unique, both musically and visually, compared to the other female acts who broke the scene in 2008 and onwards, and even those who debuted before that. And that interest over her as the latest music sensation who gave the world some of the biggest hits in the digital era, namely 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face', was entirely instrumental to the success of the debut album itself. A string of smash hits gave it longevity. And then the re-release with 8 new tracks (and 3 more smash hits) further strengthened that longevity. Without it being brilliantly re-packaged as TFM, neither her debut album would have sold as much as it did post 2009 nor would it peak at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. manicholic 3,694
After 9/11 in 2001, everything became very conservative and safe, and Gaga was the right talent to give something they desperately missed/needed. There were many other artists like Roisin Murphy and Goldfrapp that had released/were releasing similarly dance-pop/avant-fashion projects in the years leading up to The Fame, but Gaga had her unique New York sensibilities, guts and perseverance, as well as supportive family and friends. Her musical education growing up allowed her to be able to sing live and play piano when promo environments didn't fit her dance tracks, and at that time it was unheard of to have a blonde young popstar that can actually sing, write, and play piano. But again, at the end of the day, it was Gaga who was the engine behind it all, and if she didn't work as hard as she did and persevered, she would be on Rivington St. again right now There's nothing harder for people to do than admit they were fooled.
