Morphine Prince 109,984
In your opinion. It seems like the government has finally realised the majority of the public are tired of seeing minimal punishments for people who tried and kill us by blowing us up. And I'm sorry but ethics and humanity don't apply to someone who has acted as inhuman as they do So him laying on a bed getting an injection is more harsh than life in prison? How sad that people give others the power over LIFE.
Didymus 34,380
If you ask me, the passionate call for blood and "justice" of the masses is as disgusting as the crime itself. Not being able to acknowledge the reality of another person is more primitive than a death sentence.Preventing violence and keeping order in a society is not the same as stripping a man from his humanity and saying he needs to suffer for the rest of his life, whether or not shortened by a death sentence. Luiz 4,253
So him laying on a bed getting an injection is more harsh than life in prison? How sad that people give others the power over LIFE. well i think the long process it takes to finally execute someone can be worse than life in prison. with life in prison you get the ease of knowing you arent going to die but with death row you will sit there for as long as like 30 years in solitary confinement going absolutely mad just waiting thinking "is this the day" or something. reading something a little while ago that said most view death row as cruel and unusual and life in prison as a lighter sentence. I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

I see the psychological aspect of it but you're still making his life and suffering shorter. Hopefully he grows old there and doesn't get killed soon. Still don't agree with anyone having the power over someone's life.

Why is the power to end someone's life different from the power to force a man to spend his time in a jail cell until he, also, dies in your eyes? I think there still needs to be a judicial system that separates certain individuals from society in order to prevent them from committing more crimes. Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~

I think there still needs to be a judicial system that separates certain individuals from society in order to prevent them from committing more crimes. I'm no supporter for the death penalty, but just following your logic. I think it's a bit of a waste of time and resources (which tax payers have to suffer from) to just keep criminals in a jail cell instead of killing them off is the goal is to separate them from society. Any other argument in your line of thought just seems like an unwillingness to be practical, because the result is the same thing: the criminal dies with no chance of recovery.Keeping someone away from society is not the same as deliberately ending someone's life prematurely.I'm aware of that, I just didn't understand why the morality argument of the power of ending a life was so determining in MP's line of thought and why that power is so fundamentally different than waiting for a man to die in a cage by himself. I don't understand your statement on death. We are all going to die whether in a jail cell or not. I just personally find killing wrong. How are we different as a society if we do the same as these criminals?
Didymus 34,380
I believe there's evidence showing the death penalty is actually more expensive than life in prison, but I can't provide sources right now. I don't understand your statement on death. We are all going to die whether in a jail cell or not. I just personally find killing wrong. How are we different as a society if we do the same as these criminals? Oh I agree. But that's why I also criticize the "rot away in jail" opinions. Both involve ignoring the fact that a criminal is a human being who thinks, breathes, eats and ****s the exact same way we do. Stripping away their humanity, demonizing them and pretending the world is any better off by simply locking them up and hoping the disease is cured is easier than to confront harder questions about why violence comes about and how we can stop it.Actually, this stripping away of humanity is the same thing murderers, consciously or unconsciously, do to justify their actions in their minds or in the heat of the moment. So my point is: in most cases (or at least here on GGD) the same mechanism applies - treating the criminal the way he/she treated his victims. I see no significant difference between the irrationally passionate way people cry out for a jail or death sentence.Edit: This does not mean I don't make a difference between these emotional involvements of people who aren't even affected by the criminal they're wishing away and keeping order in a society. The latter just doesn't involve a cry for more human suffering.
