Does Gaga shout too much when she sings?

I absolutely love Gaga's acoustic performances. Its the reason why I became a fan in the first place. But, something that always bothered me is her sometimes excessive shout singing. It usually happens during the choruses, during belty parts, and/or towards the end of the songs. For example when she sings The Edge of Glory on Howard Stern (the choruses) when she sings Gypsy ("toniiiiiiight"), "Marry The Night" ( "Niiiiight" at the end), Lush Life (the belty parts "I was wroooooooong" and "Ill forget you I will", towards the end, "small diiiiiives"),  "Bang Bang" ( the last verse), "You've Got A Friend" (from 5:20 on she  pretty much gets progressively more and more shouty).

There are tons more examples. The performances still sound good and I enjoy listening to them. The shouting just kind of bugs me. I don't really know why the shouting happens. Maybe its because Gaga is trying to sing slightly out of her range and has to yell to reach the notes? Maybe she is tired and it takes energy to try to control the shouting ( the shouting naturally happens and she has to put in effort to hold it back)? I think the shouting happens because Gaga gets caught up in the emotional side of the songs and its how she expresses herself. Its almost like the performance is as much, or maybe even more, for herself as it is for the audience. I think sometimes she forgets that people are listening to her and she needs to sound good. Or maybe she shouts purposefully because she likes the way it sounds. I just can't help but think how much better her performances would be if she didn't have to resort to shout singing to convey emotion.

I just think that if Gaga ever wants to be considered on the same level as the truly great singers of our time (and I think she has the talent), she has to fix things like this. Just think about the Oscars performance. She didn't shout at all and she sounded incredibly beautiful. So she does have the ability.

Am I being overly picky or is this a legitimate flaw?

That's not shouting, she likes to express those high notes properly.

i don't think it's a flaw, but she obviously has a lot of stress or something and wants to get it out, i mean, i don't like it, but i couldn't do any better

I dont think its that big a problem, I only care that she sometimes tries to growl out high notes which isnt the best way to do that from a singing standpoint (and not too healthy either IIRC  )

I actually think all the times you listed are the times are a mixture of belting (Lush Life) and something else... And I live for those moments, they are great vocally. Its the growling thats the real problem imo. She tends to do that on Ballads for some reason, but she can sing it clearly too so i dont get it why :duck: She does it live really and not often ever in studio recordings.

Nah, man, I love her screamo rants. That's what makes Swine sound like Swine, what makes every Gaga song sound Gaga.

There are times where I don't mind the screaming, sometimes it makes it more real. But sometimes I will admit I cringe a bit. Regardless though, if that's how she wants to sing a song I'm not gonna tell her she shouldn't lol.

Isn't it a mixture of belting and shouting though? If she just belted without the off putting shoutyness she would sound perfect during those parts.

Anyone else hate the way she sings dope. She makes everything sound like an "O" sound and she exaggerates her vibrato soooo bad :rip:

I feel you, there are certain performances I cant bear for example the Sting Tribute  or the Whats Up Performance. But thats just a matter of taste. There are other performances where I feel it's placed perfectly. Just sometimes a little less is more.
