I think this is also why the US was spying on Angela Merkel's phone. Instead of blaming your own (past) governments for their mistakes, you'd rather put the blame on somebody like Merkel, who is the most powerful person in Europe and acts out of rational thoughts rather than populism. In countries where the economy is doing well, there's some sort of phobia for Greeks. The stereotype of the 'lazy, tax evading 55 year old Greek sitting at the beach enjoying his retirement' is so untrue and based on nothing, too. Germany just had a great government (Schröder) 10 years ago, which is why their country is enjoying a low unemployment. And Merkel is really good at diplomacy and protecting the most important laws of the EU.But what is also surprsing is the amount of Americaphobia (right term?) in Germany. Also based on nothing.
