Born this way is really not a dark album at all.

People were just expecting a very uplifting positive album and the album turned out a lot darker than most people expected.

And the heavy metal eighties visuals for the album artwork and the tour give the whole era a darker vibe too.

I think she intended it to remain quite dark. The album is teaching you to love yourself but also goes through rough patches of that road to independence and self acceptance. Perhaps you could consider it a transition album from TFM to AP but you can quite clearly sense the darkness of it in it's melodies, most of the lyrics, color scheme of all music videos and even outfits she wore during the era.

If it was intended to be a joyful album maybe she would have gone with a more AP-like approach, cause although some AP songs have quite dark lyrics in them she still made it seem like an album that really energizes you.

You and I is probably the lightest song on the album which also kind of in a way feels out of place, but it's a beautiful uplifting song.

And for those who consider Scheisse as an example of the lighter songs, its chorus is only about wishing to be independent and strong but the constant repeating of "i wish" kind of expresses that she isn't in that position she wants to be which gives it an anthemic feel but also faces you with the reality, then again it may just be my opinion on that one.

Where are the dark lyrics to me the only dark songs on ARTPOP are MJH , Dope and perhaps Aura to some extent lyrically.

It was dark even when some songs very light they had a sense of rage and sadness to for ex. Highway unicorn , queen, you and I , the edge of glory . although it had a positive message it had a dark sense of feeling to it . it complicated but Born This Way was not suppose be happy and cheerful . it was suppose to be serious , and give a message about dealing through hard times etc . its complicated if u think about it

To me Born this way is more Metaphorical than her other album . not sayin gaga doesn't always give a message but Born this way was very strong in it message and it procced it

It's pretty dark actually. Especially when compared to TF or AP. TFM remains her darkest record, though.

I always see people calling born this way a very dark album but in my opinion only 4 - 5 songs are dark. For me the only dark songs are judas, government hooker, bloody mary, black jesus, electric chapel and maybe marry the night. Scheisse is debatable but the melody is light. Americano is not dark at all its just loud and chaotic. The Edge of glory sort is very fun and has a beautiful soft joyous chorus. The album is actually quite fun, liberating and colorful. Even the era itself wasnt that dark. I mean it is darker than the fame and ARTPOP but ya'll make it seem like it was her marilyn manson era when there was a lot of fun light songs/moments :air:

Oh just go ahead and miss out the two darkest songs of her Career...

Bad Kids and The Queen

Dealing with Rebellion of the inner self and not wanting to do what mum says.

and Dealing with being a dictator of gays and abusing that right with awful imagery and outfits throughout an entire era...

pretty dark to me.

Gaga needs to approach the right thing with the right thing. She tends to shoot dark photo shoots for cheerful songs and the feelings listeners have would not match the song at all.

What's dark about it are the looks and the visuals, music just has stronger and more rough sounds compared to her previous work, and it's not pure pop. I love that album.

The themes of the music are also dark. The Edge of Glory thematically is about not reaching a glorious moment until you die, Lady Gaga said the song is about how humanity is stuck in purgatory, between heaven and hell until we die so we might as well just dance.

I like when she twists the meaning of her work though; a song may mean one thing but then she makes a video for the song that makes it about a completely new idea. One of my favorite things about her.
