Who Should Play The Role for Disney's new movie Live Action MULAN?

I just find it silly that they announce the new version and everyone's first reaction is to comment on the race of the actors they use. Who cares? A black person could be the lead, as long as the movie is well-made and interesting it's not important.

Are you kidding me? :laughga: This story is based on China's greatest patriotic historical heroine. You could understand people's concern against whitewashing the role (as always happens with Hollywood) or even just casting any other Asian actress (making it an inaccurate, disrespectful portrayal).

It's a film based on the true CHINESE story. Shouldn't the lead AT LEAST be chinese?

Whether the lead is white or black or chinese is irrelevant to me. The actress should be hired based on what an amazing job she will do, not based on her skin color/ethnicity. But that's just how I see it :emma:

Wth when are we getting a live action remake of THE LITTLE MERMAID, mess first beauty and the beast live action remake and now Mulan. Disney is sure milking this live action remake thing wouldn't blame them, they have no new stories to tell them and their tired ass so they use old classic stories which they had animated. Did I mention that even those stories aren't theirs originally they just mainstreamed them.

really when?

Avatar: The Last Airbender live action movie

Dragon Ball Z live action movie

They also changed Annie's race, but probably more for the reason of being inclusive

Either way I HATE when they change a character's Race, it is SO ANNOYING! :grr:

Literally anyone from Memoirs of a Geisha, particularly Youki Kudoh (played Pumpkin). they all did such a great job and that movie is fantastic.

I'm not sure whether Disney will feel obligated to cast someone who is Chinese, but I'll be very surprised if they don't find an Asian woman. It would just be TOO much for them to cast a white girl in this role.

Consider all of the stories of America or of white people and how only white actors have had a chance to get the role.. In the few instances where a PoC (usually black) gets said role, the entire community usually goes into an uproar :wtf: To say that its irrelevant is ignoring the reality in that movie's can promote erasure by reimagining movies that have specific cultural impact. For example, a movie like Annie which was just re-imagined from a black perspective isn't erasure because the context of the story of "Annie" is not race specific. Any child can be an orphan living in a bad situation and anyone can be a rich billionaire  We just like to assume that white people (typically men) are the default for everything, but its simply not true.

Representation IS important and casting Mulan as a non-chinese woman would harm that :sweep:. (It'd be a little less bad if she was at LEAST asian, but like I said early, it would promote the idea that Asians are not differentiable and interchangeable as just "asian" :sweep: ) If industries are going to make exclusionary roles for white roles, they should at least do the same for other specific ethnicities, correct? It's only logical :koons:

Came here to say this. She's my favorite Chinese actress. But I feel like she might be too old for the part now.
