Quartz 11,932
As long as she's popular and the song charts, she will still be considered pop. Pop = Popular Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

Whispering 18,865
She is a POP musician tho. That's the kind of music that she writes and plays.Gaga from SXSW:"I really don’t fit pop music in a way, but I came in through it and I’d like to think I’ve changed it in some way. So you all can feel you don’t have to fit into a mold. I didn’t fit into a mold; they tried."

It’s just a stupid excuse to wait for things to happen instead of making them happen

Gaga "threw a fit" about it, didn't want to do it. They had to figure out how to keep Gaga doing her type of music and make it fit somehow into the box. She is basically saying this in the quote you posted. She had to figure out how to put rock into Pop. She "happened to become a pop singer". I really think it is a little bit of both. Gaga wanted to be a pop star, but wanted to do it with music that she felt should be in Pop music. She had to figure out a way to make what she did "commercial" enough for Pop. Along the way, she's had to compromise and even those times she compromises...it seems if she is just outside the traditional pop box. That's why we got BTW and not Roar. That's why she writes her own lyrics and tends to work with producers and collab partners that aren't on the who's hot now list.
