Cody Draco 2,531
Lee's Summit students' efforts to support a classmate over a dress code issue have gone viral and even garnered support from pop singer Katy Perry. Ten days ago, Morgan Ball wore a corset, shawl, lace gloves and a belt to Lee's Summit North High School on his birthday. But the boy was sent home by school administrators, who told him the outfit was too distracting for other students. Some of his classmates have come to Morgan's defense, taking to social media to spread the word over his fight to wear what he wants to school. "I think it's everyone's right to wear what they want," classmate Andy Quiles said. The hashtag they created: #clothinghasnogender has gone viral, attracting attention from all over the world. "It's got a lot if support behind it," Steven Nelson, a senior classmate of Morgan's, said. "A lot of people backing it - it could make a big difference." Their efforts have gained support after Perry tweeted to Morgan. The superstar says she's standing with the student, and even wants to borrow his shawl. The whole thing has come as a shock of sorts to Quiles. "I find it mind blowing that something that happened in Lee's Summit could go all over the world," he said. The students say what's happened these last couple of weeks has even turned into an assignment of sorts - a lesson in life you can't get from a book. "How society generates gender roles for us and we talked a lot about what's going on," North junior Val Obiesie said. "It fit perfectly for what's going on." There's no word yet on whether the school administration will change their dress code. Can any of you handle Katy having a positive impact on the world without being pressed? I would definitely like anyone who could find and embed the tweet. Cody Draco 2,531
Students at Lee's Summit North High School are banding together after a fashion controversy. Morgan Ball, 17, wore an outfit to school for his birthday that administrators said was too distracting. They asked him to change clothes. Some students returned from spring break Monday wearing shirts with the hashtag #ClothingHasNoGender to support Morgan. Pop star Katy Perry has also lent her support. "I've just been thrilled with the support," Ball said. "I wouldn't be where I am right now without everyone else. Katy Perry is my inspiration, but I wouldn't be here without my friends and family. They're the most important people I could ask for." The hashtag has been trending all over the world in the wake of the controversy over Ball's clothes. He said he hopes the incident teaches others to be more considerate of the LGBTQ community.
