Leaked EU report shows anti-Israel concerns

Summary: A leaked EU report calls the situation in Jerusalem "the most dangerous since the war in 1967". The constant expansion of Jewish settlements in and around the city causes the tension with Palestinians to peak.

 

Every year the leaders of diplomatic missions of EU countries in Israel set up a report about the situation in Jerusalem. These advise the EU on international policies in the region. The report is usually secret, but last year's version leaked to the British newspaper The Guardian. This report is remarkably critical about Israel's rule and describes the situation in Jerusalem as "a boiling point of polarization and violance" unseen since the Second Intifada (a Palestinian revolt between 2000 and 2005).

And more: Jerusalem is seen as torn apart since the Six Day War of 1967, when Israel conquered the Eastern part of the city together with the West Bank, the Gaza strip, the Sinai ànd the Golan. "There's a dangerous spiral of violence that threatens the two-state-solution," a model for a peace proposal consisting in Israel and Palestine co-existing as two separate states. Some a--lysts speak of a "Silent Intifadah" or new awakening Palestinian revolt against Israel.

A rise of violent incidents in and around Jerusalem is factual, with the most dramatic example of the kidnapping and murder of three Jewish youngsters and a similar revenge plot resulting in the murder of a Palestinian boy. These events led to a new war in Gaza.

The most important reason for this rise of tension and violence, according to the report, is the systematic expansion of (consistently internationally decried) Jewish settlements in and around Jerusalem, especially in "sensitive areas", where Palestinians are thrown out of their houses, their home claimed by Jewish colonialists. In this way, the Arabic character of many areas is gradually replaced by a Jewish-Israeli one.

The report also shows sharp criticism of the way Israel deals with the status of the Temple Mount or "Haram al-Sharif", sacred for Jews ànd Muslims. According to the Jews it's the rock where the temples of Solomon and Herod stood, for Muslims the current mosque of caliph Umar (7nd c.) is the third most holy place after Mecca and Medina.

 

 

The report calls for harsher sanctions against Israel to weaken its politics of colonialism. Simultaneously the United States are claimed to be considering approving a UN resolution that would anchor the two-state-solution. The political victory of "hardline" prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu - someone who claimed to enthusiastically continue with settlement building during his election campaign - doesn't make this situation any easier.

This report follows hard on the heels of a letter sent by chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat to the EU's top representatieve on foreign policy, calling for a toughter stance against Israel. "We believe it is time to focus all our efforts in saving the two-state solution from its total disappearance through holding Israel accountable of its violations of international law."

The report is at the present moment discussed in Brussels.

Recommendations in the EU report:

* blocking of immigration/travel rights in EU member states towards known Jewish settlers who use or call for violence

* informing EU consumers about which products were made in Jewish-colonialized areas of Palestinian territory

* urging EU companies and tour operators to prevent support for Jewish colonization

Satanyahu said "if you elect me, there will be no Palestinian state", according to Haaretz. And this is 4th(?) time he's elected. Those who voted for him don't want peace.

Hope USA will see through all the lies and cut the ties with Israel before republicans come to power.

​The US delivers more weapons to Israel than any other part of the world so there's the money argument. Some also say that if the US would stop supporting Israel the Jewish population in the US would successfully be able to have a strong, negative effect on American economy and politics, but I'm not sure if that's really true since the idea of Jews having all the power is an age old myth with no historical foundation at all.

But yeah, I think financially and politically. Israel has one of the most sophisticated nuclear weaponry in the entire world (some say it's bigger than Russia's), so an ally in Middle Eastern or other international political hot spots could be a powerful benefactor too. And reversed, of course: if Israel decides the US is an enemy there is that same nuclear risk but the other way around. Don't see it coming that far though.

So a mixture of financial, political and social reasons, I should say.

I'm surprised a full ban on products made in the settlements hasn't passed yet, there are articles alluding to the discussion of it but I can't see anything saying it had already occurred. I know that since 2012 Ireland has been pushing for the EU to bring about this ban so it's about time really. 

Also don't get why they need to recommend travel bans on settlers calling for or using violence. Surely that should be the quota for all people who do that; regardless of whether they're an Israeli settler in Palestine or not.

It's extremely interesting what's happening in the Middle East right now, though. Iran is getting closer to the West, and with Israel the opposite is happening. Countries (and enemies) are working together against one common enemy.

Lies.

Ask Dan Cohen and many other Jewish activists visiting Gaza how they're treated. They have never seen people living in such poverty with huge heart and hospitality. They share last piece of bread with their Jewish guests. You don't know anything about those regions.
