Tina Fey's "Mean Girls" musical is one step closer to becoming a reality. In a recent interview, her husband and "30 Rock"/ "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" composer, Jeff Richmond, gave an update on the project.

"We’ve been working for a long time now," he told Yahoo. "I’m going to say it’s like 60 percent written, and it’s being staffed creatively."

Richmond also revealed that they've been working with Nell Benjamin ("Legally Blonde: The Musical") on lyrics. "We are looking to do some actual solid readings coming around this summer," he said. "The 'Kimmy Schmidt' thing took a lot more time than we all thought, so it slowed some 'Mean Girls' stuff down." He also teased one song title, "Old Blonde Song," which will apparently be sung by Regina's mother. (No word if Amy Poehler will reprise her role.)

Fey has been talking about making a "Mean Girls" musical as far back as 2007, when she said that Richmond had worked on some songs inspired by the movie, and in 2013, he told Vulture he was working on a song about "October 3rd." So fetch.

This might be the greatest sequel of all time...Tina obviously only wants to put it out if it can be a truly worthy follow-up. And really it should be that way

Why can't it just be a mean girls sequel so everyone can watch it

if the musical is a hit they would turn it into a movie anyway :emma:

But this is actually really smart if you think about it....it builds hype and people can go see it live...lots of outsold performances, and then when the movie comes everybody wants to see it because they have been hearing about how awesome the musical was and it's based on that so it must be super good....

I'd rather have a sequel :thetea:

And no that half assed B-movie doesn't count, I like to pretend it doesn't exist.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn

Mean Girls, Jawbreaker, and Heathers is my go-to High School trifecta. I love anything with a really cool bad b---h (or two, three, etc). I'm keeping my eye out on this.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
