And Gaga is a legend in the making, it's not right to belittle her as a performer and insult her hard work by calling it "a travesty" or "good for a popstar".  

​He's educated in musical theater beyond any person on this forum and probably beyond most of his contemporaries. He's at a stance where he can say a musical theater tribute is a travesty because he's devoted his whole life to the theatrical arts and has made countless contributions to it.

You can say Gaga's a legend in the making, but Sondheim is already a legend and that alone justifies what he says. It's bitter, yes, but it's not out of line.
