I don't think this was a secret.... We've been talking about her operatic / broadway style voice for years.

Government Hooker intro waves and says hi  :giggle:

true true...

here's the thing between Government Hooker & her Oscars Performance...

one of them is a lot more accessible, socially acceptable and going to appeal to a wider, mainstream audience than the other....

Gov't Hooker is a pretty risqué song. And it's definitely never going to be the type of music that is going to be as accessible...

there are a lot of secrets we don't know about. she is holding back and pacing herself, because she knows she is going to be around her whole life. we don't even know half the things gaga is capable of. there are so many things she is holding back and saving for the future, and she is constantly growing and learning new things everyday. gaga has a plan, and she is not going to show herself all at once. she is going to be around for a long, long time, and she is always going to have things stored away and protected. she will always surprise everyone forever.

Um, why did she make the Guy-ARTPOP film?  Why is she not with Troy Carter?   Why we have not heard word of TR since the dwyw video scandle.

I don't think she was holding back - She had business problems.

yes, but i thought it was falsetto

Falsettos don't "exist" in women. Their highest register is their head voice and after that it's the whistle register. Men however, have a falsetto

I agree.

I live outside the space time continuum.

I think that the invention of autotune and vocal editing software caused a trend of very "flat" vocals. Gaga herself mentioned in an interview that they edited all vibrato out of her voice.

Maybe her producers/label/whoever was in charge of that decision thought the GP would think of a traditional, Broadway-style belting voice with vibratos would be too campy, try-hard, or in your face for the radio.

But now EDM is dead on the radio so hopefully they will let her unaltered voice shine in her next release.

Hasn't been a secret AT ALL lol

Like most of us here, I have seen every Gaga performance that exists and I was even surprised. We have seen great vocals from her in the past, especially during acoustic performances, but nothing this good. The only performance I have seen of her using the light and delicate yet powerful voice like she used during "TheSound of Music" and "Edelveisse" was when she sang "Captivated" at NYU. I really didn't think she could sing like that anymore. I though her voice was damaged from years of smoking and drinking. I initially couldn't recognize her voice when she sang the initial notes.  All the great qualities of her voice like the delicate sweet style and the powerful and rich belting were put on display in a way we have never seen before in one single performance.

I don't think she was trying to keep her voice a secret. She just hasn't had the opportunity to really show her full vocal potential. Also, I don't think she was always able to sing this well before. She had to train her voice and practice a lot. There was never a reason for her to enhance her vocals to this level because she was just singing pop music before.
