Hundreds of police officers turned their backs on a screen showing New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio as he spoke at the funeral of one of two officers killed last week in what has been called an "assassination."

The funeral at the Christ Tabernacle Church, in the Glendale neighborhood of Queens, was broadcast to thousands of police who gathered outside.

The killing of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu came amid heightened tensions between the police and the mayor over what some police saw as a lack of support for the force.

The atmosphere was mostly respectful, but there were scattered signs of protest even before the police officers' action when the mayor spoke.

A block from the church, though, retired NYPD Officer John Mangan held a sign that read: "God Bless the NYPD. Dump de Blasio."

In his speech, the mayor seemed to try to reach out to police, honoring not only Ramos, but the entire NYPD.

After directing his remarks to the Ramos family, he said he wanted to "extend my condolences to another family -- the family of the NYPD -- that is hurting so deeply right now."

The night after Ramos and Liu were shot, officers gathered at the hospital where they had been taken turned teir backs on de Blasio when he arrived.

De Blasio created controversy with his response to demonstrations about police relations with minorities, after a grand jury declined to indict an NYPD officer in the death of Eric Garner, a Staten Island man who died after he was put in a chokehold during an arrest for selling loose cigarettes.

The peaceful protesters are demonized day in and day out for not giving cops the authority and respect they deserve apparently no matter what they do. Now that the time comes for them to show respect to an authority higher than them, they're hypocritical and turn their backs. But we're supposed to believe they're going to treat us, the average common citizen, with any dignity?

It's just bullsh*t on so many levels. Cops get away with such madness because they have a badge and think they rule the world. It's disgusting.

You can't generalize all cops like that. Do realize that these cops are citizens of the United States as well, just as much as the protestors; they're not some racist species that flew from a desert island and took authority here

I know many cops who are respectable, hard-working people.

Like what do they want? Why are they expecting respect and support for doing their job? :flop: They are getting payed for it. Why are they demanding people to close their eyes when they **** up and to applaud them when they don't?

Di blaso is an asshole. He deserves this.

He certainly does not. That's disrespect on the same level as the protesters but on a completely different level because these are people who are specifically trained to respect higher authorities, like the mayor. If the police want to be honored and respected and held to a higher level then the protesters or these radicals that go out and shoot cops, then they should start showing an example instead of being little b!tches.

These cops just keep digging a bigger hole for themselves, it is so disrespectful to do that to the Mayor and they look like idiots thinking that they are above the law and can go around murdering people every day without any consequences.

But most cops are the way I described them. I know there are cops who are respectable, but they're overshadowed by the idiot cops.

You know he's talking about the American cops specifically right? I disagree with the sentiment that most cops believe they're on top of the world, but it is true that most here can get away with a lot more than most people can. That's not their fault necessarily, it's just how the system is.
