Whispering 18,865
Furthermore, all of this started after that one dumbass Forbes article said she "ran hip-hop". At that point, "Fancy" just hit #1. There are black artists at the top of their game worth 100x as much as she is and she's running it? And you're going to tell me that had nothing to do with her race? There's so much more racial politics that are going into this. Some of the factors aren't even her fault, like that article, and I'm the first to admit that. But to say the only difference is that she's a woman is just flat out ignorant. Forbes says a lot of things I don't agree with. It is becoming the new Examiner type site, where they let anyone make an article about anything. In fact, they can contradict themselves in the same week. The reason for the rather immediate and overwhelming backlash is because she is a female. If Iggy was male (especially if she was a cute male) the backlash would come in a different form. There are very few women who break through, but they are going to spend all their energy needed to fight this game on taking each other down. I find it to be petty, useless and defeating the larger purpose. It's an observation and my opinion on what I'm seeing. Stop with calling people's thoughts in this discussion ignorant, telling people they should know better or running off to statuses to get attention every time someone disagrees with you. For someone who is all about freedom to express one's thoughts, you spend a lot of time trying to promote the opposite.

Whispering 18,865
The bloke can just forgotten to mention that. It doesn't mean anything really. There are women voting members. So I assume the voting members are mainly active in the music industry be it young or old. You've talked to him? ;) lol You assumed wrong. It is primarily male and it skews older. We aren't sure about the Selection Committee's demographics, other than it is supposedly a diverse group "geographically, musically, ethnically". This doesn't speak to the gender or age diversity on that committee.

And you cannot say it were mainly old male because you don't know.

Willy Wonka 4
Forbes says a lot of things I don't agree with. It is becoming the new Examiner type site, where they let anyone make an article about anything. In fact, they can contradict themselves in the same week. The reason for the rather immediate and overwhelming backlash is because she is a female. If Iggy was male (especially if she was a cute male) the backlash would come in a different form. There are very few women who break through, but they are going to spend all their energy needed to fight this game on taking each other down. I find it to be petty, useless and defeating the larger purpose. It's an observation and my opinion on what I'm seeing. Stop with calling people's thoughts in this discussion ignorant or with telling people they should know better. For someone who is all about freedom to express one's thoughts, you spend a lot of time trying to promote the opposite. I agree about Forbes. My argument was that Iggy =/= female Macklemore. To compare the two ignores the huge difference between the two. That's what I was calling ignorant. Not that Iggy would be treated differently if she were male. Women, in general, get treated much harsher by the media in Hollywood. I will say you caught me on this one because I had a full post written taking issue with your post and I realized that the logic I was using in my argument was the same argument used against affirmative action. So I'm changing my perspective. As imperfect and problematic as Iggy may be, she's in an important position right now to compliment the progress that Nicki and other historically significant female emcees have made to open the door for future female rappers to come into the mainstream. For the benefit of future hip-hop women, it may be beneficial to embrace her rather than criticize her. To be petty and vindictive though, for someone who is preaching about how tough it is for women to break through due to backlash, you've never shied away from bashing Azealia. I've always made it very clear that I'm a strong advocate for freedom to express opinions, but I'm also a strong advocate for freedom to challenge opinions. Me challenging yours doesn't infringe on your freedom to express it. I never once told you you shouldn't be expressing your opinion or that you should have that freedom taken away. SexXDreams 184
By saying that she's only getting the backlash because she's female is boiling down the differences between Macklemore and Iggy to gender, when in reality, the way they've approached this couldn't be more different. And hip-hop feuds are legendary and are prevalent in the hip-hop community. The difference is that women often crossover to the pop realm and these feuds get picked up by the pop media and are covered out of context. Jay-Z, Kanye, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Lil Kim, Queen Latifah... everyone in hip-hop has feuds. It's not a gender exclusive thing, but the way it's covered by mainstream media is gendered. The reason he isn't hated is because he handled it much more tactfully, respectfully, and honestly than Iggy has. The reason no one ever accused Macklemore of being a minstrel show is because he never tried to be something he wasn't. He rapped in his own voice with his own flow over house and EDM. And even then, he still realized that his style had deference to the origins of hip-hop. Meanwhile, Iggy calls herself a runaway slave master. Furthermore, all of this started after that one dumbass Forbes article said she "ran hip-hop". At that point, "Fancy" just hit #1. There are black artists at the top of their game worth 100x as much as she is and she's running it? And you're going to tell me that had nothing to do with her race? squeala 875
why is this most discussed? why are white guys writing paragraphs about whether or not this is an issue? IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH US.
Koreku 2,387
I dont expect her to win a grammy with songs in particular like Anaconda but she's definitely capable of winning one with her rapping skills in general You don't deserve a point of view if the only thing you see is you. DIVA 666
Maybe it doesn't seem like it deserves grammys because white people music always wins grammys That's an interesting idea, except that's not the context I meant what I said in. I'm questioning the quality of her lyrics, not her race. We're all Stronger Together!
